I have a Denon 2807 receiver and am connecting my Playstaion 3 to the reciever through HDMI. I had it connected through opticle but I was told that I could get the PCM sound format with the HDMI cable on the Playstation 3, wich sounds better. I am only using HDMI just for the audio not the picture because I currently do not own a HDTV. I set the reciever to HDMI and then set the playstation 3 to HDMI. So I put in a Playstation 3 game (that has Dolby Digital) and it dosnt swith to dolby digital or PCM. I dont know if the game I was playing has PCM but I know for a fact that it has dolby digital On the reciever it says something like Multi CH PllX music. It wont even let me switch the reciever to cinema. What am I doing wrong?

Yes, I went to the sound set up and chose HDMI and before I save the setting it lists all the sound formats. -
Wow, there is alot of misinformation here! Stop spreading FUD on this forum if you have no clue what you are talking about!
HDMI is NOT for video only, but does both(video and audio). You can NOT get LPCM through optical or coax as noted above, only through HDMI or analog outs.
OP,
Did you go through the setup on the PS3 and make sure HDMI and PCM is enabled?

L for Linear, just a way of encoding the information. In the OP's case, you can't pass lossless PCM audio through Optical or Coax. In order for the OP to take advantage of PCM, he is going to need to use HDMI from his PS3 to a receiver capable of passing it.
I think you might of been a little confused on what the OP is trying to acomplish. -
Yes but you typed "alot of misinformation here! Stop spreading FUD on this forum if you have no clue what you are talking about!" PCM does go thru optical. That question was for clairity.engtaz

WTF are you talking about??
Only 2-channel PCM is capable of being passed through optical.
In order for the OP to pass 5.1 or 7.1 PCM lossless audio with his PS3, he is going to have to connect it via HDMI.
Optical or Coax is only capable of providing Dolby and DTS formats (5.1/6.1).
If he connects his PS3 via optical he will not be to take advantage of the new audio codecs! -
Watch the typing. Their was no talk about PCM 5.1 just PCM so take a chill pill. I did not say you could not get 5.1 out of HDMI.engtaz

I'm chill. I just never heard of anyone trying to get 2-channel PCM with their PS3, that's the way I took it. (Who would want to?)
I apologize. No misinformation from you, just a misunderstanding. I just never thought of getting 2-channel, in my mind I only use it for 5 channel and the only way to take advantage of PCM is HDMI. -
No problem. I was waiting on someone to correct the no sound out of HDMI statement.
Take care.

I think I may have found the problem. I look at the setting to the Playstation 3 and seen that the audio formats that were checked were all 5.1 formts. but I had one surround back speaker that was on. I turned the back speaker off and now the reciever says MULTI CH IN. Is that would it would say in on the reciver when in LPCM, if so show can I switch it to dolby digital if I wanted to.
Another question that I have is that on the Playstation 3 you can choose "automatic" or "Manuel" for the sound formats. when choosing automatic it consists of 5.1 sound formats. and when you go to manuel and choose the 7.1 sound formats and after you save the seettings it says if you reciever doesnt support the sound formats you can damge your speakers. I am using 6 speakers not 7 so can I still put it on 7.1 and turn on the back speaker without any problems? Here are the other sound formats that im talking about:
LPCM 7.1 44.1 khz
88.2 khz
176.4 khz
48 khz
96 khz
192 khz -
Congrats glad thing worked out.engtaz
