Video switching

I started a new thread on this based upon some issues I was having with the OSD of my preamp. The processor has multiple video inputs for composite and component video, as well as s-video. It also has outs for each type. I have always run my HD cable staright to TV with component and DVD to TV with HDMI. The question is whether each of these video outs is for running video to TV and then being able to switch (I think that is an obvious yes--right?). The next question then is why the preamp has a monitor out (only s-video and composite). Is this for a secondary monitor?

    Post your equipment you have setup now. Do it in a Signature. That way people will be able to follow your questions.
