Center channel speaker function

I am trying to figure out if this is normal. Some of you have commented on how important the center is in HT and how much info it carries. I was trying a couple different speakers and noticed with the true center I use (a cheap jbl northridge), that I wasn't even sure it was playing. Held my ear up against it and wondered (almost went deaf doing that with the fronts)..took grill off and yeah, it vibrated and all...and there was sound....vocals were there (barely)...I ran volume test on all channels and volume was good. Is this just how a center performs? I had always thought it was just to give clarity and centering to dialogue in movies. (I was playing pink floyd dvd with remastered 5.1).

I actually did a bunch of testing (on concert dvd's) and it just seems that the dvd's vary wildly. I have a Roger Waters and there is NO center information. A couple others have a little, and this REM I just listened to has heavy vocals and bass in the center. I had started to think I had blown the center channel out! So, nevermind mostly. I'll pour another glass.

Neil,
What setting did you have your receiver/prepro set to? In 5.1 HT the center channel will receive all dialogue info and will be the dominant speaker for movies. The Roger Waters one may not be 5.1. 5 channel stereo will have all speakers play the same info. Maybe it is in DPL II. Check your settings and play with them as it will change the sound.

Very good point Venom.. That is the key.. Play with all of the sound field settings on the receiver. Each one varies dramatically in sound on all of the speaker, not just the center channel..
