Refinish bottom half of RT1000p speakers??

Hey all,

I am looking for suggestions on how to refinish bottoms of my RT1000p speakers? Those who own older RT series know what I am talking about - it is some kind of material sprayed(?) or glued right on the cabinet to look like grill cloth. That stuff came off in a couple of places on the sides during my previous move. Nothing major, but I'd like to get that fixed (and I have another move coming next week).

Thanks!

I'm thinking you will need to remove all of the old finish to achieve a good result.....I would make it smooth, then I would go for either whatever color you want, or another textured finish of your choice....

Bill, what exactly is this material? I am not even remotely familiar with where to get it and how to attach it to the speaker :(.

hey why don't you turn them into 1000i's, pick up a couple of grills and mount them on the lower half. Looks better than the p's

I have no interest and money to invest into new crossovers, drivers, grills, etc. It would be easier to buy a set of new towers all-together.

I think you missunderstood me, the 1000is look better becaue they put the grill on the bottom also. What I was refering to is adding the grills to the bottom od the P's I have one of each. the 1000i's are just a slight upgrade of the P's and the bottoms grills are only for a cosmetic loook.

All you would need is two grills for your P's to look like i's

This isn't a bad idea either...I have no idea what the finish is on there now, I was thinking you could choose a new one, "mod" them if you will....

Dave, I misunderstood you indeed... I don't think those bottom panels are removable - they are probably parts of the cabinet. I would love to use a pair of grills rather than that "stuff" on the bottom, but not sure if I'll be able to do the "mod".

It would be very simple to do actually, 4 holes and it mounts right over the bottom section looks identical to the top. I'll try to take a picture of one tonight so it will make since.

This is all for nought if you can't get the grills though.

You mean, I'd have to drill 4 holes for pegs? I just don't see how those bottom fronts of 1000p's come off. Grills shouldn't be a problem - there is a local Polk distributor in Brampton (Toronto) - I should be able to check with him, if we deem this idea to be working :).

Yes The grill would mount on top of the bottom half and allign with the top grill. You are going to cover the felt like material on the bottom with the grill On the 1000i's it is just like the 1000p's except they have this grill that goes over the bottom half for appearance only. The bottom half of the 1000p's is not removed. The grill you have on the top half is identical to the bottom half

    Pics work now.

I don't think RT1000i bottom grills would cover sides of the speakers, where filler is peeling off :(
