Help Converting VHS to DVD

I'm looking for information on how to transfer some old family VHS tapes on to DVD. Does anyone know of a program, either shareware or for a nominal purchase, to accomplish this? Also, what type of sound/video card is needed to connect a VCR to a computer?
Thanks in advance.

I would just use a standalone DVD recorder. That way you don't need a computer, hard drive, or capture card.
Something like a Panasonic DMR-E95HS would work fine for this purpose.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

What appadv said.
I am using a Panny DMR-100HS to transfer my old Beta and VHS race tapes and it works good.
Yes even the old Beta still kicks VHS in the weeds for quality and resolution.polkaudio SRS (rdo194 x 8)

This will let you load video onto your computer and save it to DVD or just to the hard drive. You can edit the video too if need be with the included software. The main point of this unit is to feed TV into your computer, but it is basically a video input device with a TV tuner. That and it all connects via USB so you don't have to open up your computer to install any new hardware.I know just enough to be dangerous, but don't tell my wife, she thinks I'm a genius.

Probably not if you only have a few to do.
Last count I had over 100 to transfer and wanted it to be free from my computer.polkaudio SRS (rdo194 x 8)

There are many ways to accomplish this. I would agree one of the easiest is to use just a set top DVD recorder should you wish to bypass the learning curve associated with the many SW/HW choices one has for a PC approach.
