Ditched the rear speakers again....

Well, I was bored today and decided to switch things up a bit. I disconnected the rear speakers (only used them when I had passengers in the car). I am now bi-amping my Rainbows again, and giving them all the juice my Arc 4150 is producing. Nice to have the extra headroom, and ability to use the time alignment to further tweak the sound to my liking. I ended up delaying the mid on my side by .3ms less than the tweeter. The difference between the tweeter and mid on the passenger's side was only .1ms. Spent a little while listening as well....... very nice :) .

If I end up running the rear speakers again, I will just add another amp (small one). The down side to this is that I will loose the ability to have different time alignment values between the tweeter and the midrange drivers.

    3 ms?!?!?!?

That dont sound right my brother. My big **** Dodge Ram needed only 1.6 ms of delay to get right. Or is that .30?

    Ok. That sounds better.

A little trick - fade all the way to the right and then add delay to the tweeter til you hear the image raise up to the tweet's level (it wont come all the way up but it will raise up some). Then turn off the mids, fade back to center balance and adjust the delay on the left tweeter til the image centers up. Then turn the tweeters off and center up the mids. Then turn them both on and try to get them together.

Right now my left tweeter is at 1.45, right tweet at .5, left mid at 1.35 and right mid at 0.

I actually have done that in the past, by ear. I have measured my car and converted these measurements into millisecond values. I use these as starting points and then adjust from there. I still remember some of the values from my other cars. I can still remember the ones from when I had my Alpine TDA-7558 cassette deck connected to my ERA-G320 processor.....this was quite a while back...late 90's :).

My values are left tweeter 1.6 milliseconds and attenuated 1db lower than the right, right tweeter 0.5ms, left mid 1.3ms, and right mid 0.4 ms. The sub is ofcourse at not delayed.

Why do you have the left mid delayed?

Its the furthest away from you so it shouldnt need any delay.

Probably the same reason you have yours delayed.... it is the the second closest speaker to me.

I think you mean why do I have the right mid delayed :). Because the furthest driver from me is the subwoofer in the trunk, not the passenger side mid. This helps with bringing the bass up front.

Yeah, us Tennesseans have trouble telling our left from our right. ;)

My right mid is the furthest speaker from me. My sub is right behind the rear seat and believe it or not, its a couple inches closer than the right mid.

Some guys add delay to all their speakers but their subs so you hear the sub first and then the imaging cues from the front stage. This does a great job of pulling the bass up front but I never could get it to work just right.

The only thing that is GIVING ME FITS right now is that vocals, especially male, smear to the right mid some. I cant fix it!

Have you tried switching the phase back on the mid and tuning it that way?

Yeah. Did that the weekend before that after the Buwalda show. One of those "sitting in the motel parking lot til 2 AM the night before the show" tuning sessions. I now have all of them back in phase.

Its gotta be just a frequency response hump from where the right mid is more on axis than the left so those frequencies have more intensity/volume. Its just a matter of time I hope. Surely Ill stumble across it one of these days.
