Used HTR?

I could use a recommendation on new or used HT receiver/amp for 5.1. I don't need bells and whistles, just power. I have run a Yamaha 5240 for about 7 years and have started blowing a speaker fuse now and then as I play music concert DVDs at ever higher volumes. I don't run any video through the amp and only need it for audio (and use the optical audio on the dvd). I also could care less about a tuner. Thanks.

Denon, Onkyo (even though I went from Onkyo to Denon) are a couple of names I can recommend from personal use.

Thanks. The Yamaha puts out 70 watts all around into 8 ohms.

Since you like to have the volume high, the best you can do is to get a separate 200wpc or more amplifier to power your speakers. That way the strain is taken off of your receiver & your ears will give out before the amp or your speakers do!

I just spent an hour or so looking through my receiver manual and the dvd manual (Panasonic S77) and also tried some a/v guides online. This is what I do not understand (among many things). Do you run lines directly from the 5.1 channel outputs on the back of the dvd player (except sub) into the 5 channel amp and on to speakers, or do you have to have an external decoder or preamp in between dvd an amp? Part of my confusion is wondering what does the DD or DTS processing that my HTR does now?

Your Yammi does not have pre amp outs to be able to add a separate amp.

You have a few of ways of going.
    1. New/Used HT receiver with preamps out to add external amplifiers.
    2. New/Used HT pre amp adding external amplifiers.
    3. DVD to 5 channel amp.

Your Yammi is limited to using only it's built in 70 watts. I won't even get into line input amps.

I have figured that out (finally). So, let's give that to my son and I then buy....a preamp/processor that decodes DD and DTS and a multi-channel amp? The DVD plugs into preamp/processor? The problem I see with a lot of equipment is that it has way more options that I need. I just want to hear high quality DVDs at fairly high volumes. I plug HD cable and DVD straight to HDTV. Live is tough when you get past plug and play!

I wouldn't have started this connection here, but it became obvious to me after some more research that I don't need/want a regular HTR.

    Yes,
    1. You want a HT receiver with pre amps outs, if you decide to go with separate amps eventually. You use the HT's internal amps then add external amps per your buget.
    2. a Preamp HT unit then you will only use external amps.

I went with step number 1. (Just make sure you have enough optical or coaxial connections and video connections you need.)

Or you could just buy a B&K and be done with it.

150 watts per channel (8 ohm) and high current output, does a great job with my 4 ohm SDA surround setup.

I caught one off the bay real reasonable.

Thanks. I spent some time on Rotel's site since my "higher end" 2 channel stuff is Rotel. I think I am catching on. One more question if anyone has the time and then I will end this post and figure out the rest trial and error or god forbid go to the audiophile shop that is a block from my office. As a generalization, can you connect the dvd to the DD/DTS sound processer with your optical audio out or do you have to go with the 5.1 rca outs on the back of the dvd? Thanks again (and I am out).

B&K AVR 505 <---$1500 used at ebay today, blue light special. So, hows come you can't just run the 5 channel output from the DVD player into the 5 channel amp if you don't care about tone controls? isn't that sound already "processed/decoded" ? Just curious.

you probably could run your 5.1 outputs from your DVD player straight into your amp.. BUT, how would you control the volume? that's where a receiver or a pre amp comes in.

Some people have run their CD players straight into their amps. using a left and right RCA interconnect. BUT, here again.. it has to be a variable output on the CD player.. otherwise, if it's not.. you would probably blow a speaker within seconds from the intense volume coming out of your amp.

Optical, it handles the 5.1, 6.1&7.1 Optical and coax are digital connections.

Think about what you want to do.
    1 preamp 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 = 5, 6, 7 channel amp or amps

    1 HT receiver 5.1, 6.1, 7.1

200 watts a channel will run most speakers you have now our will upgrade to.

My Denon 125 watts a channel but I run 1 Adcom GFA-555II, 5 - Outlaw Audio M200's all are giving 200 watts per channel. Denon is now a pre amp. I bought as I could budget.
