Wow I'm unlucky

This is at least the third or fourth time this has happened to me, and I don't upgrade all that often. Anyways, I have developed a pattern of bringing something new into my system, and something else dies on me.
This time, I hook up my new Rotel amp, and something goes wrong with my preamp. I'm hoping its just the tubes, but I don't know yet. All I know is that it powers on, I turn the gain up all the way, and just a whisper comes out.
I'd be sleeping on the couch if I hadn't figured out it was the preamp. My wife knew how much the amp cost, and when we looked at each with the no sound filling the room, I could see the fire in her eyes.
The only good part is that my one and only source at the moment has a variable output from the analog outs, so I can still use my system.

I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
Did you flip the balanced/unbalanced switch on the amp to the setting you need? Just a thought because I had a similar problem once.
