Saw The Decemberists last night...very disappointing

Last night I saw The Decemberists at Riviera Theater in Chicago. I'm sorry to say it was one of the worst shows I've ever seen. Very dry and dull...sounded like they put in a CD and strummed their instruments. The crowd had very little energy, which didn't help. I actually left early and went to the classic jazz bar next door, The Green Mill, which was a lot more fun.

I hate when you see a band you like...then you're not sure you like them any more.

Bummer.

Wow... I saw them last Friday and enjoyed it immensely. Then again, the crowd was extremely energetic and I believe the group fed off of that. Maybe we just wore them out for ya. Nothin' left in the tank.
Tons of interaction with the crowd... which I didn't expect.

That being said... did you see the opening band? Was it My Brightest Diamond? Their drummer was phenomenal. I couldn't stop watching him. Highlight of the night.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I think you hit the nail on the head...sounded like they were just out of gas. They played at the Riviera the night before, so that might have added to it.

But based on your comments, I'll give 'em another shot next time they're in town.

Missed the opening band, unfortunately. Good stuff? I'll check it out.

Yeah.... even though it was a seated venue, people were dancing in the aisles. It was manic and the band reflected that through much of their set.

As for the first band.... disgustingly good. But it was the drummer who commanded the night. I swear he played his entire kit. I mean everything from his chair to the stands to the side of the kick drum. It was a percussive tour de force. I seriously could not keep my eyes off 'em. When the singer introduced him, the entire place went nuts.

That's why I don't go to the Riv anymore. I only go to House of Blues and the Vic.

I'm kidding, I've never even been to Chi-town.

All bands have a bad show. The Decemberists have been one of the best bands I have ever seen live, and I have been to a lot of them. Sorry to hear you caught a bad one -- guess I have been extremely spoiled.

Well... if it's not in a Gatorade commercial or featured on the closing credits of Grey's Anatomy, then it can't be good can it?

Based on their songs, I was thinking they had to be History majors, that picture confirms it! ;)

Yeah, but they were selling Crane Wife in Starbucks, so they're not far off.

"Game, Set, Match" Lucifer and all the minions of Hell

I swear I took off my pants last night only to find that they had opened up a new Starbucks in my boxers.

Yeah, but I heard the only sell Short sizes of coffee at that location. :p:p

Well, they are on Capital Records now...so, not exactly a surprise. They'll fade back soon enough in my opinion. Not a good thing, but it's just how it works.
