Dark Side of the Moon...

What more could possibly be said for this album?

Well, I've had an entire day (thanks to the a$$holes who are supposed to be retreating my abode for termites) with nothing to do. Since my MFSL copy of DSOTM showed up in the mail, I figgered I'd give it a listen.

Now, I have the remastered SACD, the 180gm reissue andn now the MFSL version. So, why not compare them?

I've listened to the reissue a couple times over the past few days playing with my new turntable platter and discovered that side 2 on that LP just didn't sound right. First, I panicked thinking it was my gear...but, no, everything is ok. Second, I thought, maybe it's the LP and thought about busting into my sealed copy (but decided against it). Compared to side one, it lacks a lot of presence and weight and sounds compressed.

So, I picked up the MFSL. At first listen, I was prepared to say that the MFSL is better. Which, at the extreme ends of the frequency range, it is. The sound is overall more homogenous. However, again, side 2 just isn't getting it for me. Why I don't know.

I played each LP twice through, alternating sides from each LP, and after a LOT of thought. I'm going to say that each LP has it's pluses and minuses...and while they both sound 'different' in a way, in terms of quality, I'd say that they are pretty even but will give the overall nod to the MFSL.

What about the SACD you say?

hearingimpared, don't read any further.

(looks both ways)

It's the best of the bunch.

There. I said it. Blasphemy.

The SACD version is much better to listen to than either LP.

For whatever reason, side 2 on both LP's sound compressed to me. Not so on the SACD (or at least better than the LP's although the side 2 material, I've concluded just wasn't recorded as well). Don't know why, that's just how I hear it.

Well...we all now know you are totally full of crap.

    Digital sounding better than analog?

....and on a Sony CHANGER no less.

    Not possible. ;)

    Whoda thunk it.

If I had to go with side 1, I'd say the LP's were even with the SACD. The side2 material though, man, just doesn't get it for me.

I don't recall mentioning an armboard, however, when I added the MKIV platter, I had to add another armboard.
