Plot outline from Imdb.com:
"In the cold land of Antarctica, the Emperor Penguins each express their true love with a special heartsong of their own that expresses their very being. However, the misfit Mumble cannot sing, but instead has an extraordinary talent to tap dance with almost magical energy and expression. Nevertheless, the deeply conformist leadership of the colony fearfully blames the young penguin's unorthodox ways for the lean fishing that threatens them all. Defiant in the face of unjust rejection, Mumble and his true friends set out to find the true cause of the famine. Through the motley crew's trials and perils, Mumble learns many things about his frozen world, not the least of which being that his toe tapping talent may be what he needs to save his people. "
From the MBBL movie review service:
A W E S O M E !!!
Visually, this picture is stunning. Viewing it at 1080i, upconverted off the ol' Oppo, was ...... well...... did I mention awesome ?
One scene after another, each one more eye-opening than the other. Whew.
It'd be worth watching if there were NO plot and it were a silent movie.
But Brittany Murphy and cast dish out some fantastic vocals with, as my kids put it, "Old School" music.
And it does have a nicely crafted sub-plot with a message, but it isn't a "Hidden Agenda" pic designed to make you sign up as a volunteer for the Democratic Party (:) ).
The IMdb site gives it a "6.7" user review score. I found that unbelievable, so I started reading the negative user reviews.
Generally speaking, quite a number of users who gave this flick a bad review was due to their belief that this movie had an "anti-Christian" theme.
An atypical bad review:
"Wow, was I shocked at the overwhelming Left Wing agenda in this film and particularly the anti-Christian bigotry. It's pretty sad when Liberal Hollywood has to stoop to brainwashing little kids' movies to get their bias across. This is about as low as it gets. Hey, all I wanted a funny, cute animated film and I got all this other junk thrown in my face.
Every single "religious" reference in this film, and there are a number especially around the one-hour mark when "Mumble" appears before "The Elders." Then, you hear a slew of Biblical words ("brethren," "backsliding," "sin," "pagan," etc.) all used by unlikeable old fuddy-duddies who are portrayed in a very negative light. The idea is obvious: associate anything religious with "bad" or "restrictive" or "mean" and the opposite - secular thought - with "free" and "good" and "happy," on and on.
"
I'd disagree with that sentiment but I post it so that you know that there is a contingent of folks who do see a "Hidden Agenda" in the movie.
I'm not sure if this movie is available in Blu Ray or HD, but if it is and you have the gear to run it, do so.

Great family movieengtaz
I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
* plot spoiler *
This movie is on both HD formats and the visuals are outstanding in either. You have to get the HD-DVD version for the TrueHD track, though.

I liked it. But when the big bad industrial fishery ships destroy the entire ecosystem of antarctica with the UN eventually outlawing all fishing, I'd say there is a definite political message. I mean the message used to be to outlaw whaling. Now, countries aren't supposed to even harvest fish from the ocean?
But it's supposed to be mostly fun, and if you just skip over the environmental or religious posturing, it's a great ride.
