Cable Design And Use

Are there significant differences between design types of analog interconnect cables made by major manufacturers. For example, Monster Cable sells a variety of interconnects at different price points which are designed to be used with different components. (e.g. Monster Bass 400 for subwoofers, and THX series for other components.) Is there really that much of a difference in the design, or is it just hype. I do recognize there are differences between the individual manufacturers and in price quality from say their reference series, but are subwoofer cables really different in function from the general component cables. ----Several manufacturers have their own specific subwoofer LFE interconnect cables. I have several spare high quality standard 2 meter RCA analog type cables, and am questioning the expense (albeit minor) and need of buying the specific subwoofer cable. Thanks in advance for any info you may have on this question.

for the most part it's just hype. I've never understood why a company sells 5, 6, 7, or more levels of interconnects. they should sell three at the max.
entry level cable, mid priced cable, and high priced cable. that's it. Audioquest does it too. They have 10 different cables they claim.. and all offer different levels of improved audio clairty. I say hogwash.

I like danger_boy's rule of three. Best Buy will tell you just about anything to sell their products.

Very interesting thread, I agree with all that has been said. Maybe an audiophile or those that have been in the game longer can chime in.

It's an old debate. There's plenty of opinions posted on this forum and all over the internet, have fun. However, I think there may be one absolute, if you haven't tried it for yourself, you really don't know.

Thanks for the input everyone - the following is an email response I received from Monster Cable's tech folks:

Using the THX 1000 or our reference series analog audio interconnects will definitely work for a subwoofer application; however the major difference between the full range analog audio interconnects and our subwoofer cables is that the subwoofer cables are constructed with more solid core conductors for better bass response.

Not sure I would be able to tell the difference, so I am going to stick with the quality cables that I have already purchased.
