in line to pick up an HK avr7000 for dirt cheap ($25) on CL that has one surround channel not working. this was at one time their flagship receiver and has "amp ins" in addition to the preouts usually found... these were spec'd at 110 wpc with 5 channels driven and benched at close to 170 wpc into 8 ohms in stereo. rated at +/- 70+ amps current as well. any reason why this would not be a good stereo power amp on the cheap (aside from not knowing what damaged it and what will go next)?

If it were me, I'd save the money and buy an amp that is a little more reliable. For example, you can buy Adcom 535's all day for 125.00 tops, and these little puppies will surprise you. Just my .02 worth--good luck :)
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Listen to them. While you probably think you're getting a good deal cause you're only spending 25 bucks, it's still a BS deal. Just wait and be patient. The name of the game is patience. You have to wait, for the RIGHT thing to come along, and you know and I know that the HK is the not the right thing.

I think it depends on what you plan on using the receiver for. If its to drive a pair of 8 ohm towers, or perhaps to drive Front Left, Right, and Center channels in a 3.0 or 3.1 system, then I think its a great deal.

It really hinges on its future use. I would buy it regardless. $25 bucks? Its probably gone already. If I got my hands on it, I'd probably even entertain the idea of getting it fixed.

yup monster... gone already... told him i'd take it the instant I saw the ad... still not quick enough. i was thinking along those lines as well... the first thing I would have done was looked for blown fuses, then get a repair estimate. I have older RT-series speakers, so 8 ohm... probably would have been great for the fronts and center... anyway back to looking for a decent used power amp :)

Yeah, I need a power amp too. I have an HK 525 driving four LSi15s and a LSiC.

I had family over for the weekend and we watched Master and Commander. I left to get something, came back and my brother had jacked up the volume to -16. Ive never gone that loud - I guess my family is deaf or something. I didn't say anything about it...I just crossed my fingers and hope he didn't blow a tweeter or driver due to clipping. I could care less about the HK. Blowing the HK would just give me an excuse to pick up the Parasound Halo. :)
