Just curious as to what others are using in their HDTV surround sound setups.
I've got an older Pioneer Elite AVR I was planning on using but I don't even think it has component video. So, what are y'all using? Component video, HDMI, or? Anyone have any comments on either?

Component video. (if I get a new player soon though, I may switch to HDMI) either way it is straight from the player to the TV -

The only thing video wise that connects my Pre/Pro to my TV is a composite video cable for an old VCR that I have (and for setup of the pre/pro).

Audio over HDMI may become important to me at some point in the future, but it is not a big deal to me right now. (since I do have any HD-DVD or BlueRay sources right now)

I have my video direct from the set top box to the tv via component.DVD player is also component due to the fact that it dose not have HDMI.

I use component video from my HD Box into my receiver which is then upconverted and scaled to 720p via HDMI output. My DVD player is HDMI into the AVR. It was a great help mounting my flat panel when I only had to run one wire through the wall.

So do most of you go directly from source to TV for video connections and then from source to AVR for sound?

So if you go HDMI for DVD it's just for the video?

Cool...I guess you don't really need all that **** on the AVR then. I'd really like to use my old Pioneer Elite VSX-07TX even though it's a bit antiquated. I'm just a bit out of touch on all this newer technology. Thanks for all the replies.

I can't imagine why people would want to run cables from their television and their avr, this is even more puzzling when some AVR's have better scalers then what are presently in their "up-converting" DVD players and televisions.

Because it works HDMI to TV, TV wouldn't pass DD5.1 from optical out on TV to AVR. So Optical out of source to AVR works all the time, HDMI to TV works all the time.

I was referring to simplifiying things with 1 HDMI to television from your AVR and having the rest of your sources connected to your receiver if possible using HDMI; less wiring, less cost in wires, one remote control.

    Ok, here's my burning question....

No one has ever answered my question about HDMI at AVR will the menu / volume show on the screen of TV when using HDMI in / out?

If no why would I or anyone upgrade for HDMI switching at AVR when most TV's now can switch HDMI inputs. So with a newer programmable remote one has one remote with all the switching you could ask for.
