Speaker Distance from a Wall Behind?

Hi guys,

Searched the forums, but no success. My RTi10s are situated where they are level with a wall running behind them. Is there an ideal distance from the wall that they should be, taking the Power Port Plus into consideration? They are approximately 110mm (4 1/2 inches) from the wall at the Power Port Plus and 135mm (5 1/2 inches) from the actual rear of the speaker itself.

I am just wondering if it should be closer or further away from the wall to maximise bass response etc from the Power Port Plus.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gaz,
The closer the speaker is to the wall/s, the more bass you will hear. The downside, besides possible boomy bass from the wall interaction, is a diminished imaging depending on your room. You can experiment with toe in/out and moving the speakers away from the wall. You will have to find the happy medium for your room and your seating arrangements. Also experiment with leaning the speakers back a bit to improve imaging and bass response.

I can't remember what it is called, rule of 3? I remember reading way back when the best location for your fronts relative to the room should be 1/3rd of the way in.

FL should be 1/3 of the way off the front wall and 1/3 of the way off the left wall. FR should be 1/3 of the way off the front wall and 1/3 of the way off the right wall. The listening position should be 1/3 of the way off the back wall and 1/2 of the way off each side wall (middle)/

Like V already said if you have them to close too the wall you are more prone to boomy bass. If you wanted just loud bass you want them as close to the wall as possible to excite modes, of course this would result in one note bland bass...but it would be loud.

If you want the best sound quality possible you need to move them away from the wall more, I would say start with moving them a foot more into the room and see how they sound.

    Thanks Jared, V and Mike.

Something to experiment with for sure. I'll try various options and report back. First of all though, before I experiment too much, I'll be getting either a used Rotel RB-993 3 channel x 200 watts amp (currently on eBay Oz) or forking out for a new Rotel RMB 1095 5 channel x 200 watt amp, as I read all through these forums, it will bring the RTi10s to life.

It will also give me the option to upgrade to the LSi9 and LSiC at a minimum and have adequate power to drive them.

Thanks once again for your help.

Very smart move, as an amp like that you don't really ever have to upgrade again no matter the speakers.

It took me a while to get the placement for my AAD 2001 monitors just right. They are now 4' from the back wall & 3' from the side walls. With this positioning everything just came together like a giant gigsaw puzzle. Incredible sound! Everything is dead on now & I don't plan on moving them. Play around with different placement & you'll know when you get it right. It's a lot of fun really.

Thanks - this stuff is fun and very, very addictive! It will start all over again when I go to the LSi series.

No doubt. Then it gets REAL addictive, but fun just begins.
