This kind of stuff is interesting to me, so it might be for others too. I'm not posting this to start a fight or to say that one format is better than the other. Just posting an interesting progress report on the HD movie market so far.

Now this report is released by Sony, but it is a very rare opportunity for people who don't pay Nielsen for their numbers to access actual sales data for HD software. Nielsen numbers are the most accurate reputable estimates the industry has for this kind of marketing info. So if you get past the bullet points and actually look at the aggregate data, you can get a nice accurate picture of the HD software market.

The biggest spin for Sony was waiting until the week of Casino Royale to release the numbers. By this date, Sony could report that blu-ray pretty much leads in every category, YTD sales, since inception sales, all trends, all individual title leaders YTD and since inception.

The BR version of Departed is now the all time leader in since inception sales edging out HDDVD's Batman 38,993 to 34,313. The two versions of superman come next at 30,845 (BR) and 28,440 (HDDVD). Then BR's Casino Royale (28,306) and Departed HDDVD (23,454). The last four in the top ten are all BR.

What I find most encouraging from the report is that BR is holding up quite well from the peak sales last Christmas. With player prices coming down and all the new hardware for both video and audiophiles being released leading to next Christmas, I would expect increasingly healthy HD sales numbers for the next holiday season. This should at least put to rest that both formats are some how going to die. But like I said, I don't want to start a fight between formats by this post. These are reputable numbers. If you don't want spin, just look past the bullet points. If you don't like stats, just don't click the link. Otherwise, enjoy looking up your favorite HD movie and seeing how it's done. :D.
