Any thoughts? Just looking for a good Pre with updated features.
I see it doesnt have HMDI or w/e - is this important? Im not big on TV and will eventually run a better TV than I currently have.

From what I have read, the 970 is a pretty big step down from the 990. I would get something inexpensive (used of course) until the HDMI pre's start coming out later this year.
(in my case - I will have to wait a few years just cuz I can't afford what I want new....)
MichaelMains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -
Who uses DVI?? HDMI not as important as audio inputs.
How many HDMI's do you have?
3 component video inputs = OK 3 optical inputs = bad.
First, figure what Audio and video inputs you need.
1.3 HDMI not out yet thats why I say at this point HDMI not important.

I have the Outlaw Audio 990 pre amp.. it's my first real home theater pre amp.. it's quite good IMHO. For me not having HDMI was a no issue. I run everything with component video anyways.. component video looks exactly the same high quality as a digital connection.. ie: DVI / HDMI. very few people can see a difference between component and HDMI.
Go for the 990 pre if you can. It's a good bang for the buck. Outlaw audio has excellent customer service as well.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

What is the difference in SQ between the 990, and 970? I have been looking at these too. The only thing that turns me on about the 990 is phono inputs.
Thanks BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Thanks for the link DB, but I have already been there. I have checked out all the features, and the only thing it boils down to for me is SQ.

I've never owned the 970 pre, so i can't say how it sounds compaired to the 990. I was very suprised just how good 2 channel sounds from a HT pre amp with it though. I had my doubts that a HT pre amp could do 2 ch too, but it can, and does it well.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Thanks DB thats what i am mainly looking for:)
The one thing I really like about the 990 is the XLR outputs on the 990.
Can you use rca, and XLR at the same time?

From what I have read, no you can't.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

I would think not... and for short runs of cable length the extra cost of running XLR cables isn't worth it. stick with the RCA's.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I thought HDMI was the new way to transfer audio, as even if you don't have 1.3 you can still transfer PCM via the older standards. The only other way to get the multi channel PCM would be running 6 or 8 cables form the player to the pre.
This is all of course assuming you are using a newer Blu-Ray or HD-DVD source. To my knowledge if you aren't going to use HDMI for video there is no real benefit for standard DVD players.
