Just saw this on blu-ray. It's a movie that has a sort of seven samurai feel to it but the story really can't compare to that classic. Ironically it's set in the 'wild west' of 8th century China and has the feel of a 60s or 70s western.
The PQ is really good and it's a shame that they couldn't have brought the same PQ to House of Flying Daggers. The AQ is also very good and comes in the standard Sony uncompressed PCM.
This movie is definitely not for everyone, even fans of flying daggers and hero. The fight scenes are good but they lack the ballet wire work that most asian imports have these days. Instead, the fights are up close and personal. No flying around twirling in the wind. Just step up, drive your sword into some Turk's guts and drive on to the next guy. I actually thought it was a nice break from the stylized kung fu that usually makes it over here. I also really enjoyed the visuals as almost every other scene is a long shot of some sweeping vista.
The price is also right. It's only 19 bucks at amazon. It was released with very little fanfare a week earlier than its announced date last week. I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up in bargain bins at some point. Might be worth a look on the cheap...
