This is for a friend of mine's installation. He needs a 35ft run thru the wall & is wondering if a DIY HDMI cable is possible. I told him I really don't know because of the audio & video running together. Any comments or suggestions.

Why not just get the cheap cables here?

They have like 100ft lengths if needed. I haven't ordered from them, but others on this board have said they are the real deal.

Thanks for the link. They are excellent prices. My friends only concern is the size of the hole needed to feed the cable thru the wall. The HDMI head is pretty big. He's hoping to only have to run the cable & then put the HDMI head on if that's possible. He hates having to put holes in drywall & wants to keep it as small as possible.

I'm using HDMI Tin-Plated Copper CL2 Rated (For In-Wall Installation) Cable (22AWG) - 35ft to run from my wall through the attic and down to the projector. It bends, but don't expect tight bends. He can get the HDMI wall plate if doesn't want a hole. Here is mine:

    pearsall,
The hdmi cable has 19 conductors including 4 pairs of twisted shielded pairs. I don't know anyone that sells the raw connectors. One big reason that all you see are molded hdmi connector shells is to make sure it all holds together. This makes for a very tough DIY construction.
I had the same concern as your friend concerning the size of the hole in the wall. You could do a connector plate as previously suggested which is the cleanest installation.
I opted to make the hole big enough to run a bunch of cables (future expansion option...) and made it look pretty by using one of those pass-thru hole plugs - similar to what's used to route power cables through desktops.
It ended up looking pretty nice and this method has the advantage of eliminating a couple of connection points. My philosophy is the fewer connectors the better. ;)

Oh yeah, I tried the monoprice 22ga hdmi cables (35 ft) and I am VERY satisfied with the performance!

Here is a place that sells the raw connectors and cables:

BTW, the 30ga cable they offer is only good for short runs. I wouldn't use it for anything over 2-3 meters myself.
I still wouldn't want to bother though. The hdmi standard is so flaky, I'd be afraid of chasing gremlins with this laborious diy. But, then again, nothing like a good challenge:eek:

Bluejeans Cables makes HDMI cables in about any length under 50'. They make good stuff, plus have an unconditional return policy, and the price can't be beat. I wouldn't DIY them because there are some many things that could go wrong with all those wires. Hope this helps.
