I brought the Carver PM-175 home tonight (back story). After listening to the 7B's on the Rotel 971 for a while I switched them out. I was prepared for a farily subtle difference as the Rotel is a 'high current' amp despite it's 70w rating. But listening at the same volume level on the reciever I am pretty impressed.

I could go into alot of overused hyperbole but let me just say that the 7's have woke up. They sounded good on the Rotel, but there is more presence with the Carver, up and down the frequency range. This just makes me even more curious about the crossover upgrade (thanks heiney and jake :p ) How far can these ancient wonders be pushed?

Isn't this hobby fun! :D . I say do the x-over mods, just make sure you get the correct schematic if you have the peerless tweets because I believe there is an extra part or two. If you aren't sure pull the x-over and look at them or call Ken at Polk CS.

Very quickly listening to my 5's last night I noticed a much more forward midrange (good) and a bit better top to bottom coherence as well as little less edgy upper frequencies. There also seems to be a little bit more transparency in music that wasn't there before.

I noticed all this just "off the cuff" so to speak as I haven't spent much time listening or breaking them in yet. For the cost of the parts it's really a no-brainer if you plan on using them for awhile.

Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it.
