Hey guy and gals.

I'm in search for a good AVI converter. I have found WinMPG but if you dont pruchase it it leaves their stupid watermark on the vid.

Any good freewares out there? Something that will convert anything and wont leave that stupid watermark logo on the vid?

I have also tried AVI2MPG but it doesnt seem to work with the vids I make with my webcam.

Thanks in advance.

What are you wanting to convert to?

Virtual Dub is a free program that can compress to DivX if you have the codec installed but of course the output file is still an AVI

Right now the only thing that can read my web cam vids is my VLC player. Every other player I have (WMP, Quicktime, RP) gives me an error. The file just reads ****.avi I need to find a program to convert to avi but an avi that works.

Ahhh, ok. I would assume that it uses a proprietary format when encoding the AVI from the Webcam. One thing to do is download Gspot (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=GSpot) to determine what codec it uses. Also, if none of this works, you can do a screen capture using Windows Media Encoder and save the output file as an AVI

Thanks for the GSpot. It tells me my video has IV50 codec with Indigo 5.x (which I believe its telling me that my cam is a Logitech). When dealing with codecs how do I go about adding or installing new codecs?

See I dont want to have to install the codec in every machine I send the file too? Is there a way around this? I guess thats where a converter comes in.

typically, they are self extracting and will install themselves in the correct directory.

Yes, converting to an uncompressed AVI or a WMV will keep you from having to worry if others can view it though there are many compression formats that WMP natively supports.

I did the self extracting...But now only my WMPlayer will play it..not Quicktime or Realplayer. Its like the codec only installed itself in WMP.

Strange... welcome to the confusing world of digital video. Best thing to do is use a converter to turn it into a standard AVI

Ok I just converted it with Stoikvideo convert2. I converted it uncompressed AVI. Now everything plays it.

I remember now why it didnt work. I edited the vid with my Logitech cam software. It must have recoded it when saving the edited version.

Probably, if you want to edit more similar videos, it may be best to use Windows Movie Maker, it should have come with Windows and in timeline mode does a nice job.
