Monitor v. SDA questions

It is so nice to find a group of people who are more obsessed about Polk speakers than I am. I have been reading the forum for several years and had to re-register because I forgot my original info. I would really appreciate some opinions on a few basic questions. I currently own 10B's, 7's, 5's and just purchased some good-looking 5 jr's off ebay. My sone might get those. My 10B's were bought in 1983 if I recall when a law student in Utah. They have traveled all over the country and still look new and play great to my ears. All I have ever had to do is replace fuses when playing the White Stripes Blackpool DVD too loud. The questions:

1. I have always wanted to add Monitor 12's to the collection and have a good media room in the basement for them now. Will there be a big difference from my 10B's?

2. Frankly, I was not aware of the SDA models and am wondering how they compare to the 1980's monitor series. They obviously went for a lot more money. When I bought my 10B's, I thought they outdid the JBL and Bose and anything else that was close in price. The best thing I have found since is the Monitor Silver 6's I have.

Sorry...don't mean to write a book...I will appreciate any advice on these issues.

Mike

Where are you located? We tend to post speakers for sale on *bay.craigsl, and audiol. I have the SDA SRS 3.1TL's. The sound stage is unbelievable.

The SDA's open up the soundstage a lot. They are my favorite speakers!

The 7's are my favorite monitor followed closely by 10's, neither can compete with the SDA line. Although they share some common drivers they are much different in design.

I would recommend that you search for the SDA 2.3 (preferably the TL version).
Or, go look for a pair of SDA 1C's. They will be more entertaining for your basement than a set of Monitor 12's.

I'll second the 1C's. Once you hear those you may just decide monitors are no longer on your wishlist. :)

Hey thanks. I'm in Kansas City area and just passed on some Monitor 12's on ebay. They sold under $400. Was gonna have a friend in Chicago drive over and get them....but hesitated. I will start looking at SDA line and see what I can learn. Mike

Cool. Once you hear a set of properly set up SDA's you will never be the same again. :)

The 1C's are the best combination between price and quality in my opinion.

I am seeing some used SDA's and often they are missing the interconnect cable. I can't find anywhere on the polk wesbite if that part is available? Anyone know about this. Thanks. Mike

There is a cable with a pin/blade end configuration, another with a blade/blade configuration. The blade/blade is available through Polk still for $35. There are also a few write ups around here regarding constructing either style yourself.

In what part of KC are you located? If you would like, I could bring over my CRS's for a demo some time. I am south of KC in Miami County.

Funny how life is! My friend was massively into Bose. 901 and the cubes. I convince him that he needed to try some floor standing speaker, about that time a friend of his needed to get rid of some Polk 3000's and he was hooked. Then he got the SDA SRS 2's and his life has completely changed his way of hearing music. I picked up some SDA SRS 3.1TL's and is has been great. I picked up "The Compendium II" (a must have for SDA fans) and found that these 2 sets of speaker were not made that many years so the are harder to find.

    SDA great sound stage,

Stubby: I'm in Shawnee in nw part of JOCO. I do get to Miami Co. once in awhile as I do legal work for Louisburg. I just purchased a 2nd pair of 7's and plan to give them to my son in a year or two. Ebay still has a pair of SDA-CRS (no interconnect cable and the guy claims you can use speaker wire to connect..which seems doubtful). I so seldom sit in front of my 2 channel I'm not sure if CRS are worth the cost....though still fun to have. Mike

Stubby, I don't even mean to sound picky since until a couple weeks ago, I wasn't sure what the SDA series even was. Do you have the CRS with double or single tweeters? I've bought 3 pairs of speakers in the last 30 days and just fired my best client today (but my wife might get a promotion!). Still...I'd be interested if the speakers are in good shape. I've been lucky in that I've gotten 4 pairs of speakers off ebay in the past few yrs and all have been near mint. So, how do you like this weather? feel free to email me at mms3rd@everestkc.net. Mike

The speakers are of the single tweeter variety. I just replaced the tweets about 9 months ago with the silk domes from Polk. Yes, they are in very good shape-I'd say high 7 to low 8-conservatively. Now I realize your name is Mike so I'll stop calling you Neil!

Its a heck of a good deal at $225. It wasn't too long ago that I sold a set of CRS+ with original stands and replacement silk tweeters for $400 (not including shipping).

The SDAs series are to me in another league from the monitors, slightly different timber, but the sound stage is sooo much better Ive had a set of 10b's. The 3.1tl's to me would be the other set I would like to get ahold of....

I have the 3.1's and their great and tend to be one of the few SDA SRS that can work around the dreaded WAF.
