HDMI and Comcast DVR

Hey all,

I just bought a new LCD and tried hooking up cable via HDMI...no go

I have one of the older DVR boxes with DVI, so I used a DVI to HDMI plug..get the message.."your HDMI signal is compromised, use component cables".. You think I got this message because of the DVI converter, or because HDMI just doesn't work with Comcast?

I called Comcast and they don't even support HDMI (how convenient)..

my mom has a DVR with HDMI and was thinking of exchanging for a new one..

but since I still have a bunch of shows to watch, it won't be for a awhile..

anybody else have luck with their boxes and HDMI?

I got this same message once when I tried to "live plug" in the HDMI cable to my TV (basically, while the TV was on and had the HDMI input selected, and the cable box was on). I got around it by shutting off and unplugging my DVR for an hour or so, and then making sure everything was OFF before plugging it in again. Has worked fine since.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

you think it should matter that that I have to use the DVI-HDMI plug? You wouldn't think so, though...digital is digital..

I'll try your suggestion when i get home from work

    thanks!

It shouldn't matter at all, but that doesn't mean it won't :)

But seriously, HDMI / DVI is all encrypted, and if you plug in the cable while everything is on, I assume the handshake can go awry causing the cable box or TV to think the encryption was compromised. Unplugging was the only way I could find to get them to "reset" and allow HDMI again. HOpe it works.

I was told by comcast just at my house that i would have to upgrade to a dvr box so i could use a hdmi line. My older comcast box will not support hdmi. This would cost 5.00 on to the 150 i pay now. No go. You should get this free for being a comcast subscriber. I am using component cables, and they work fine.

I never understood the "you should get this free" mentality. Technology changes pretty quickly, you expect Comcast to just throw out all their old technology every time a new thing comes along, and provide the newest thing to their customer for FREE? How does that make sense?

Regardless, five bucks a month for a DVR is the greatest investment you will ever make if you even watch two shows on TV. Now that I've had one for 9 months or so, I would rather stop watching TV forever than watch it without a DVR. I got to my parents house and want to shoot myself in the head as I watch commercials and can't pause to go to the bathroom or anything else.

I agree BUT..if I do pay the extra for the DVR box (which I Do), the HDMI SHOULD work...but Comcast says they don't even support HDMI

I also understand that those cable boxes don't work too well with receivers either, which sucks for those of who like to do video switching, and/or who only have one HDMI input on their tvs

Look i have had comcast here 5 times. You talk about mentality. One of the biggest companies and no one knows nothing about their products. I know nothing is free anymore, but their customer service sucks. I understand they will not give you a box for free. All i ask for is someone who really knows what they are talking about.

Make sure your non-HD output setting is at 480p, NOT 480i. I got that same message one time switching back and forth.

To get into that menu, turn the box off then hit menu on the remote.

ETA: My Comcast DVR box with HDMI output worked fine with my plasma. I got video and audio. Granted, I didn't do a conversion to DVI, but right now I'm running component and separate audio until I get another HDMI blade.
