Congrats. I thought you were looking at some Mac gear several months back. My 352 is just amazing and I am considering getting 2 501's. But I think the piece of jewelry comes first this time!! Havr you tried using the different ohm taps yet? I've found I can change the flavor by switching between the taps. For this week, I'm on the 8 ohm tap. Gordon

    Gordon,

Let me tell you, I've always had a vision to someday owning a Mac. Hopefully the day is close. I think the MC402 replaced the MC352. Is there any real difference between the two or simply a name change? I can't fathom what running dual 501's would be like. I'm sure I would be left speechless. What other amps did you own & what are the musical differences between them & the Mac.

    Phil,

I listened to the 352, 402 and of course the 501's. Frankly, I didn't feel there is much difference between the 352 and 402. The 352 won me over for a couple reasons.

    1. We're only talking 50 watts. To some, that may be a lot but to my ears the listening levels and type of music we listen to, the 50 watts was not noticable.
    2. The eye candy factor. I liked the looks of the larger meters and the cleaner face on the 352 vice the 402
    3. The price was right on the 352 at the time. The 402 wasn't.

The 352 has served us well. During the times we've really cranked it up, 350 watts of real, pure Mac power will bring home the fact you own a fine piece of equipment. The amp cannot clip with the built in power guard and my clip light has never come on during extended periods of full power. Mac tends to under rate the power levels on the amps, so I am sure it puts out well over 350.

At average to low listening, i.e. 3.5 to .35 watts the sound is as precise as at louder levels. This is where we usually have it set and depending on the cd, maybe 35 watts. Not sterile, like I thought my Krell FPB200C was, but just enough warmth to suit me. The Krell seemed kinda cold and biting to me.

The 501's on the other hand are an animal!! They brought a level of power to my set I didn't think possible with my speaks. Made them a complete speaker. The bottom and mids were much more filled in and real. All Mac amps are honest and they will reproduce the recording good or bad.

I have my daughters wedding to pay for in June so the 501's will have to wait till Christmas. I wonder if a piece of jewelry on top of two big boxes under the tree would do the trick?
