I recently acquired a set of Polk Monitor 7(C?) speakers. When they arrived
I noticed a thud in one of the speakers. I removed the bass radiator and
found the SL2000 tweeter magnet in the bottom of the speaker cabinet.
I inspected both the tweeter magnet and the crossover. There appears to
be no visable damage and thank God the driver and radiator cones are not
damaged. I tried reattaching the tweeter magnet to the housing, but can't
get it centered because of the magnetic force. After hooking up the speakers
I noticed this tweeter is muted and does not sound nearly as
"bright" as the undamaged one. Is this problem fixable or should I file an
insurance claim with the shipping company?

The speakers are 24" x 14" x 10" with beveled cabinet around the grills.
They do not have an external fuse. They weigh 33 lbs. each. The tweeter
is a SL2000 dated April 8, 1988. Serial no's. are 7 48299 and 7 48229.
They have a rosewood plastic laminate finish. Are these speakers Monitor
Monitor 7 or 7C?

If I do have to replace the tweeter is the part still available from Polk?
If I have to replace this one should both be replaced?

Any sugguestions on how to reattach the tweeter magnet correctly?
How do I go about testing the speaker for additional actual damage?
How would you procced?

Forget the claim, no external damage is an automatic denial. Forget trying to fix the tweeter. Either buy a used SL2000 or two of the new RD0194-1 replacements that Polk sells.

I agree, just look for a used one or buy the new version. The tweeter is ready for the garbage. They are easily found cheap on the used market....namely, here. You can replace just one and it's not worth the hassle to report the claim.

You can remove the tweeter from the other, working speaker, and install it in the "damaged" one in order to test it for functionality. If it sounds like the other speaker, problem solved. If it still sounds muted, let us know and we can help.

If you need a replacement SL2000, if Ben wasn't able to accomodate you, drop me a line. dorokusai@comcast.net
