What would be more difficult to drive: an 86db / 8ohm or a 88db / 6ohm speaker. Or would they be about the same. I'm talking SS power, not tube.

Now you know how much I love my AAD 2001 monitors. Well, it's big brother the AAD 2003's are calling me. I even took my wife to listen to a nice selection of Stephen's speakers & she was speechless after hearing them. I'll tell you what though, he has a new line, JAS Audio which are fantastic sounding also. I don't know if I'm ready quite yet though cause the 2001's are a tough act to follow. Decisions, decisions, decisions!!

Interesting. I wouldn't think you would have trouble driving them though. What was Stephen using to drive them when you were auditioning them?

I wouldn't even think about it. The difference will be nominal, at best - assuming the (nominal) specs are accurate to begin with. Good high current power in the back end, and roll whatever speaker you want to into the rig.

Stephen had the Plinius SA-201 (225watt) driving the 2003's. I pretty much was just asking out of curiousity to get others feedback. My Van Alstine (220watts) will drive pretty much anything. The only problem with the 2003's is there weight (140lb each) they would be a real pain to move to get behind my set-up. But I'd come up with some sort of dolly or something. Boy this is a tough decision. Might not happen too soon though.

Stop thinking about it. Just do it.

I'm sure in this case it will make essentially no difference whether you have the 8 ohm load or the 6 ohm load. HOWEVER, not all speakers are created equal, and the nominal impedence rating is only part of the story. Take a look at speaker reviews on Stereophile.com; be sure to check out the MEASUREMENTS section of the review. Some speakers have significant deviations from nominal impedence, perhaps dropping way low at some point. Others have issues w/ the phase, which can also make a speaker tough to drive.

choice "D"... "Not enough information is supplied".

The sensitivity "specification" tells you nothing about the impedance curve of the system (as was just mentioned above).

Indeed, without knowing the reference signal level (2.83 VAC? 1 watt?), we cannot even say for sure which is more sensitive. If the reference is 2.83V, they're about the same.

Shut up and put up the dough. Phil, you know you are going to do this so stop chasing your tail with it. Ask Frank about the 2003 specs, he'll tell you the truth and then it's a matter of trading up to the 2003s and even maybe trading up from the Van Alstine amp. I'm willing to bet that your amp will drive them in your room at the moderate levels you listen to your music. Besides weren't you considering the phase inverter?

You really can't compare an 8 ohm speaker from one manufacturer with a 6 ohm speaker from another. It all depends on how they rate their speakers. I build speakers for a hobby and I'll be damned if I've ever used an "8 ohm" driver that's NEVER not measured under 8 ohms. Generally the woofers in an 8 ohm speaker dip down into the low 6s when in the upper bass/lower midrange and they'll get closer to an 8ohm impedance once they hit the midrange. Above that they'll start to have a rising impedance which usually is taken care of with a simple impedance correction circuit called a zobel, which is irrelevant in this discussion :)

What I'm trying to say is one manufacturer might consider their speaker to be an 8 ohm because truthfully it does operate near 8 ohms for most of its bandwidth. However, it will dip down into the 6s for bass. The other manufacturer might like to report the whole truth and publish its speakers lowest impedance.

Truthfully, I wouldn't worry one bit about it. I've driven 2 ohm speakers off a cheap Panasonic XR-25 digital amp without problems. I'm now using 3.6 ohm speakers off the same amp and running them HARD and the little receiver has never even hiccuped.

    EDIT:

Here's a pic of a Vifa woofer's frequency response and impedance plot (at the bottom). Note: This is considered an 8 ohm driver!

    I hope this helps!
