Help with PSW650 and new Yamaha 2700 setup

Hello,

I must say I have been out of the loop regarding HomeTheater in the past couple of years. I just recently bought some new HDTV equipment. I pulled my old POLK RM7600/PSW650 out of storage. My recent setup was using the rm7600 speakers thru my psw650 sub about 3 years ago on my Pioneer Receiver.

Now I recently bought a Yamaha 2700 receiver which I was told to use the LFE into my Yammy 2700, not the old way. And basically let the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) setup everything. My question is what setting do I leave the sub on? When using a LFE rca cable to the receiver.

1. 80Hz or FULL RANGE?
2. Variable low pass crossover 40Hz-120Hz?
3. Switch Bass boost 3db or 0?
4. Switchable Phase Alignment NORMAL or REVERSE?
5. Power ON/OFF/AUTO?
6. ONLY CONNECT THE LFE/SUBWOOFER IN RCA CABLE?
Thanks for your help.

Lucky, welcome and congratulations on your excellent new receiver which should serve you well for many years. As far as using it to set up your sub and speakers, you should carefully study the 2700 manual, but note the following:

    1. Although you previously connected your speakers through the PSW650, you'll now be connecting your lampcord directly from the 2700 to the speakers, so the 80Hz or Full Range option on the outputs from the 650 to the speakers won't be relevant, since those outputs won't be connected.

    2. and 6. You'll be using a single coaxial cable with RCA plugs from the sub output on the 2700 into the single unfiltered LFE input on the 650. This bypasses the internal filter in the 650 and lets the 2700 handle the crossover duties. So, the 40-120Hz sub crossover setting is also not relevant, since it's been bypassed.

    3. The 2700 has plenty of voltage on its sub output and doesn't need the 3dB boost which might be helpful with some other equipment.

    4. This tries to have the sub cones working in coordination with the speaker cones. Try both settings to see if Reverse might give louder and/or smoother bass. If there's little or no difference leave it on Normal for the auto setup procedure which the 2700 will do using YPAO.

    5. Generally use the Auto setting, which turns on the sub amp when a signal is present. If the sub amp is having difficulty turning or staying on(not typical), you could set it to On instead.

Great Thank you so much John

But I just found out going over the toggle switches I found 3 of them broken off. :( I decided to open it up and see if it is a easy fix? Nope I think most of the switches are set correctly though. I will be gettting my new Yamaha 2700 in mourning. If it doesnt work does anyone know where I can walk it into to get fixed vs sending it to get fix. I live in Long Beach, CA. I see a POLK sign by Long Beach airport on the way to work. Is that a service area I can take it too?

If the 3dB bass boost switch is broken in the on position, the boost is unnecessary, but not really harmful. If the phase switch isn't in the better(if one would be better)position, YPAO can automatically compensate by adjusting the sub delay. If the power switch is either Auto or On there should be no problem; if unfortunately it's broken in the "Off" position and you can't use some tool to change it, then the green power indicator won't light after you have everything wired up and turned on, indicating no sub amp operation.

I am not getting any bass at all from my 650 when hooked via RCA cable LFE in on the 650 and from there RCA cable into my Yamaha subwoofer input?

(Note: The only hookup I have on the sub in 1 RCA cable from the sub to the receiver and the power pluged in as well on the sub. I am getting a green light on the front of the sub, but just no bass???)

Okay, checking back in after a few days, and still some difficulty that nobody's helped you with. First, back on your question about the dial on the front numbered 1-11(which I didn't see last week), this is the sub volume control(which the manual should describe)and probably setting it a little less than half, say around 4-5, should give the 2700 a good setting to work with.

Now on the no bass problem: did you just use the wrong term, i.e. subwoofer input rather than output, or did you in fact connect the cable into the multichannel subwoofer input on the 2700 rather than the correct subwoofer output in the group of preouts? Connecting an input into another input would do nothing, of course; you have to use the subwoofer output connection that's farther to the right in the section labeled preout. Hopefully you've studied the section in the 2700 manual that covers setting up and you're aware that you have to indicate that you're using a sub, otherwise it won't send anything through the sub output.

Yeah I tried all plugs on both sub and receiver. I called Polk and talked to a girl gave her my info never got a email or call back. So I called back talked to a guy and he said they dont carry that part any more? I said I was just at Fry's Electronics and I saw a Polk Sub 505 thru 1000 and it uses the same toggle switches. He goes well we don't have any laying around. So when I was at Fry's I asked if I can listen to the RTi 10 & 12's and he says I can't we have no power on the wall for the speakers?? So I took my sub over to my brother-n-law house took it apart. Ordered 3 toggle switches cost $20.00 plus the fuse was blown out. I will fix this sub and sell it as a RM7600 package on ebay, and I am moving away from Polks. I just put a offer on Audiogon for a Paradigm Studio 60's and a center 570 and rear's 20's
    Time to move on.
I want to thank everybody on this Forum that tried to help me. I just feel the money I put into a product should have customer service.

    Thanks again John K

Thanks for the update. I am glad you got everything resolved. I'm sure you will enjoy it for a long time. I used to have the PSW650 and it is a fine subwoofer. I also have the RXV2700 and love it!
