HD-DVD in Standard Player

I have a friend who mistakenly purchased the Departed on HD-DVD (she didn't know what it was) but she said she was still able to play it her standard Pioneer Elite DV-46AV player.

Obviously it didn't play in high-def, but I didn't know that an HD-DVD could be played on a standard def player. I haven't been to her house yet to see this, but has anyone else heard of this as being possible?

It's a 2 side combo disc (HD DVD /Regular DVD disc) that's why it can be played on a regular DVD player.

If your friend put the HD DVD side on his Pioneer player, it will not recognize the disc.

Thanks gonzalr that makes sense. I would have probaly seen that had I made it to her house, but that makes perfect sense. She's new to home theater, and doesn't really shop for DVD's so she just picked it totally unaware of what she was purchasing. But that answers the question that was puzzling me.
