Blood Diamond

Bought it on impulse, and I have to say it is a very good movie for me. Leonardo's acting is on par with his performance on the Departed. Plenty of good clean surround use of action's effects and PQ is very good (regular DVD). The story line might be a bit of a stretch, but I think the underlying message and factual events are real. All in all, an 8/10 for me.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I thought it was a very good flick. I was expecting some over the top political movie (similar to Hotel Rowanda). There is actually some very nice action in this flick as well as the political message(s) it conveys.

Solid movie. Worth at least a rent, if not a buy.

Just watched this, very good film, I really enjoyed it. Just SD-DVD though, neighbor rented it.

Did anyone else notice that the first 1/4 of the film the PQ is crap, the EE is so bad it's almost unwatchable. After about 30 minutes in the PQ gets much better. Very odd.

    Rented it last night.

Yep, very good movie, solid and believable, with good acting. I thought Leo gave an especially strong performance and pulled off the accent well.

One of those flicks that made me feel very fortunate to have born in the USA.

Ron, I also noticed the very noisy picture at the beginning on my fp.

Just got finished watching this and I will admit that I rarely have liked a Leonardo DiCaprio movie. I thought this movie was very, very good and found myself liking his acting. This makes you think a little bit (though don't really know how accurate it is) about precious stones and how they arrive to the US. Very good acting, entertaining, suspenseful...........just a good movie all around.

Watched it last night. I like it, not a Leo fan but he did a good job acting and the accent was pretty good throughout. I found the PQ very poor in the beginning of the SD DVD but it seemed to get better deeper into the movie. Strange I thought. Some really good surround effects and some decent lows.

Just watched it, thought it was fantastic. Really intense.

I think Leo gets a bum rap because of Titanic and some other goofy roles he had earlier in his career. Every serious movie I've seen him in he's been phenomenal. The Aviator, Gangs of New York, the Departed, Blood Diamond... all just great roles, and great acting by him.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Just watched it with the Mrs; great movie.

Leo is really maturing as an actor and I agree with everything above.

Unfortunately, I don't think it'll matter. Years ago I tried the whole "South African apartheid system ruthlessly exploits people for diamonds" argument on my soon-to-be wife, and it didn't work. She ended up losing the diamond ring, and I wasn't even upset.

I would rather have a nice stereo, or a nice bicycle or a nice anything else rather than a diamond ring. What a fantastic waste of money IMO.

If the social justice bit doesn't affect her judgment of diamonds, it's not hard to convince someone just how worthless (except for industrial purposes, of course) they are. I strongly suggest the Frontline episode on the diamond empire:
    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/programs/info/1209.html

There is also a Nova episode on manufactured diamonds that is VERY revealing. Diamonds are for fools and drill bits.

    Oh yeah.

On a serious note, my sister's husband is Afrikaans and thought Leo's accent was spot on for a Rhodesian. The story, overall, is accurate, although I'm sure some action and stuff was added to juice it up a bit.

I totally agree with you. I never saw Titanic. I did see the goofy, "modernized" version of Romeo & Juliet in which he starred back in the 1990s. I didn't like the movie that much but it didn't color my impression of his acting skills.

Since then, he has emerged as one of my favorite actors. You already mentioned The Departed and The Aviator in which he was phenomenal. But I also thought he was especially impressive in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? I mean he was like a 14 year-old (?) kid at the time playing a mentally retarded kid. I couldn't believe how real he made the character seem. The other movie that sold me on Leo was Catch Me if You Can. I didn't fall in love the movie or anything, but his acting was once again stellar. That role is a little more subtle than the others, but if you pay close attention, he really masters every detail of the character he plays.

I say all this not having seen Blood Diamond yet. I guess I better run out and rent it...

Exactly, he pulled that accent off perfectly.

Watched on HD DVD, it is a good movie. I am also not a Leo's fan. I was a surprised by his acting ability. The HD-DVD has very good HD quality.
