I seen in a different thread where you recomended a tube pre and a solid state amp combo. I am thinking about buying a tube pre for my 2 channel setup, and taking my lexicon pre/pro and using it strictly for home theater. What pre or pre-s do you recomend for a 2 channel setup? 2k or less. if its possible to get a decent one that cheap. REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

$2K will buy a nice tube pre amp. What amp are you running?

I am currently using a proton AA-2120 amp for 2 channel. I was using a carver TFM-35x for 2 channel but I actually like the sound of the proton better. It has to me at least more clarity than the carver did. and even though its only rated at 120 wpc its the balliest little amp ive ever heard, no lack of bass or reserve power for transients.

Someday of course I would like to trade up to something better. parasound, classe, anthem etc. But one step at a time. and I feel the next step is a tube preamp. I remember listening to old tube radios when i was a kid and loved the sound. So its back to the future for me I guess lol.

I would recomend an Audio Research; several models to choose from. I have the SP16L and plan to keep it. You can find one of these for around $1,200 used.

Lots of Modwrights around and we'll probably see the price drop even more now that the new one is coming out soon.

Thanks guys all of you. I guess I will have to get my reading glasses out and do some research. It looks like a good group of choices there. This is one of the best things about a forum like this is the combined knowledge and experince. There is no doubt this has saved me time and money both by having people who have allready travelled down this trail on there way to audio nirvana speak up.

I wish I could tell you which one mates well with your Proton, but I haven't clue.

I have a sunfire tube pre ready for the selling block. I also happen to have the proton 2120. Excellent amp. I will mate the sunfire with the proton and give you a report.

should be a treat. the proton is very dynamic with an extremely low noise floor while the sunfire is warm with a huge soundstage.

I would think just the opposite, as the new one is 2x the price. $4995 is a little rich for most I would think.
