G'day JimBRICK,
I have both and I find the Yammie brighter. Musically, Marantz usually kills it and Yammie does it for HT (in my opinion).Regards - Gaz from the land of Oz

I find all this receiver and amp talk in sound qualities to be somewhat humorous for the most part, no offense given.
Some receivers and or amps actually attenuate and frequency range to give their product a little different flavor, but thats all in the mid to high end region of pricing.
Everything else boils down to the power they consume and output.
Brick and Mortar named products, claiming to put out over 50 wattsper channel can only do so on upper end frequency's, not lower, sub 100 hz. Their power supplies and or amps just dont have what I call the torque to drive sub 100 hz at the 50+ wattsper channel. So lower frequency's are down in DB versus higher ones, making them go what people call bright. All attenuation is placed at higher frequency's because the amps and power supplies cannot put out enough to drive lower ones. 100 hz is not even close at some times, just a example is all, some maybe even much higher before they run into trouble producing equal DB throughout the frequency range.
Better receivers and the list is much smaller, Marantz, HK, Denon, Onkyo dont share this problem driving low frequency's and you'll find there actually pushing closer to there ratings across the frequency range. They wont attenuate brighter sounds due to lower frequency's DB's are up.
I call this Torque.
Vehicle engines can have all the horsepower in the world, but if they lack torque, there slow to move and cant sustain speed very well at a fixed pedal amount. A vehicle with much less horsepower, but with a greater amount of torque can accelerate faster and sustain speed with less pedal control.
Think of it this way.
Ever see Fast and Furious????
What wound you rather have to push or pull a load???
The Rice burner whom can barely smoke the tires at launch or the Mopar at the end of the movie that wheel stands?????????? Same applies to receivers!! -
I get yah. well I win the marantz in 10 minutes so I will see when it gets here2 CHANNEL

While John has done an admirable job trying to explain 'brightness' it doesn't explain why some people complain of shrill on amps such as Bryston and Krell. Use your ears...they usually tell you what's going on much better then what white papers can. I do think Denon and Yamaha lead the pack in terms of overall value. The latest Denon 38 series and Yamaha RX-v2700 can't be touched in their respective class in terms of value.
