    All joking aside...

My Dad's system is a joke.

Nice amps, speakers - poor source and preamp.

His main source is digital cable.

The SVS is a massive bass piston - I think I've heard 2 notes the entire time from that thing. Im not dissing SVS - its just very* outclassed by the mains of this system.

    Haha, I am not joking.

He runs the big Outlaw Preamp (ht)
big ol pass lab mono blocks (120ish pounds a piece)..
Digital Cable for his main source and a Philips DVDP in the 800 range for the other source...
    and a SVS ultra
Monster and entry signal cable for his wiring...

Utopias hug the wall, speaker behind the EC towers...

Its a joke for such fine gear.

   Outlaw pre and Pass Lab's mono blocks    .He deserves to put in front of a firing squad. <JK>, but talk about a mismatch of components. Boggles the mind. I'll take those Pass mono's off his hands for the price of a couple of Outlaw M200 mono's. :D

Well to be honest I believe the amp is much more important than the pre as they have a more difficult job....but if I had the scratch for Pass monos you can bet I'd get a pre that wouldn't look totally embarrasing next to them :D

Geez, he could at least pick up a nice Cary or BAT in the $1K-$2K range from audiogon!

Sadly the poor speaker placement isn't too uncommon with grandiose speakers like that (just browse some pics on audiogon). I feel sad that such wonderful speakers are being utilized far below their potential. Of course, you should definitely be proud of your Tylers and the solid efforts you've invested in your system!

    Thanks Mulveling....

Well Jesse words it best - crap in, crap out.

The preamp has to send a good signals for the amps to reproduce with force...

The Outlaw is a great unit, but when you are running 30,000 dollar monos and 90,000 dollar speakers you shouldnt skimp.

My Dad is a status man though, not much about audio enthusiasm found in this setup..

My setup is going to be all about Audio Enthusiasm! Im just NUTS!

Never, ever, under estimate the importance of a great pre-amp. Especially at the level of equipment like the Pass amps and the Grand Utopia's. Of course it's all ruined with a less than stellar source. All components are equally important to get the best from the system as a whole.

Haha, that is one speaker - unless I personally owned it - I would not remove the speakers...

I will say that the cabinet is around 2" or so thick, all seperate encosures and weighs around 4-500 pounds.

Why don't you just bring over your Shanling and have him compare his digital cable (gasp) to your CDP.

Its insulting he uses digital cable as his source.
