Whoever told you that is an idiot!
AUX and Phono are not the same in any way. Aux is just like another CD or Tape input made for high output sources (150mv). Phono inputs are connected to a phono gain stage that increases the gain from cartridge output (MM is usually 4.0mv) to a level that matches other inputs (roughly). Phono stages also remove RIAA equalization to make the record sound correct. Without RIAA, the bass would be very weak and the highs would be extremely prounounced. The music would sound like it does when you put your ear close to a record stylus.
They only way an Aux input would be associated with phono is if you had an external phono stage and had it connected to the amp/preamp/receiver through the Aux connnector.

Edit: There may be a handful of preamps that are labled Aux and have an optional phono stage installed or something strange like that, but its not a common thing. Best thing is to check the web for info on the preamp.

Huh? I thought you were designing Sonic Holography type circuits? If that were the case, I woulda thought this to be sort of a no brainer.
