At the price of those speakers they had better smell like clean fresh kitty cat. I won't use that word here, but you know what I mean. :D Sorry about this post but, someone out there was probably thinking it.

Well I agree with MWh for the cost of these things that should be a free option with the centerfold pin up to boot.

While it's not unusual to get a bit of smell off a brand new subwoofer, it is usually just some extra glue from assembly burning off. If you have drastic amounts, there are a few things to think about...

Are you running them ported or sealed? Is the smell like that of burning glue? Burning voice coil?

Are they powered within their manufacturer's recommended range (or overpowered)?

If there is any doubt, I'd call customer service, explain your situation and what the subs are being used with and get their definitive opinion.

it smelled like a vc and its stoped now. i turned my amps up and gave them a good work out. i think that the excess glue was just burning off the voice coils. i only had my 500.1's gain turned up about a third of the way so i turned it up about two thirds of the way and the smell stoped and now my winshield flexes

i've had 'smelly' speakers before -- not specifically polk sr's, but generally a lot of 'brand new outa the box' speakers will have a 'smell' to them for a while -- i'm not so sure its related to anything electrical or mechanical as much as its akin to 'new car smell'.
