Level display on receiver

I have seen differnt types of displays for what level the volume is set at. For example, on my old KLH5000, normal listening was at 15 to 20. With my new receiver it is at -50 to -70. My question is what do those numbers correlate to, or do they correlate to anything? The receiver I now have is a Pioneer VSX-816.
