New HT setup question

I have just purchased an Onkyo TX-SR804 receiver and would like to know if the following proposed setup would work well with it. I don't have much more to spend than these components for now. Hopefully I can upgrade the speakers later. Main use is about 75% movies and 25% music.

I am thinking of using the Polk RM20 speakers (fronts, center and rears) with a HSU STF-2 Sub.

Any comments/suggestions would be very appreciated.:confused:

    Welcome!

I'm using the RM20 speaker package (three front 6901/RM201's and two back 6801/RM-101's) and a PSW10 sub with my Onkyo TX-SR304 and my set up works fine for my 13' x 13' living room. Any amp volume over "44" (it goes up to "79" according to the manual) is too loud. Main use is 100% movies here.

I wouldn't know about the sub but make sure to use Sub = On, Front = Small, and Back = small (amp speaker settings) and use the bass management Polk suggests for your sub/front speaker hookup. I liked my hookup more doing it this way as opposed to letting my amp handle my front speakers and sub by itself.

I'm very happy with my set up and I would think your 804 shouldn't have any problem at all handling them. Seeing as how it has pre-outs you shouldn't have any problem upgrading the speakers but make sure they're 8 ohm speakers. People a lot more knowledgeable here than I am say that 4 ohm speakers AREN'T the way to go.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to a Tweeter to listen to the RM20 setup. I don't think I'll be able to go for much more bucks for now.

Save your money and buy what you really want the first time. Don't settle for something that isn't going to make you completely happy.

I went to Tweeters and started with a RM-10 package (four 6801's) and later bought two 6901's for the fronts. That's what the RM-20 package has (two 6801's and three 6901's).

I know what you mean about the money thing. Something is better than nothing. I also couldn't afford to get more expensive speakers so I started with the RM-10 and when I could afford it I upgraded my fronts. I couldn't be happier with my set up now.

Well...now that leaves me with two extra speakers if I get a 7.1 amp. It's either that or an HD TV next. As we get closer to the 2009 deadline I'm guessing HD TV prices are going to drop a pretty good bit. I'll problably upgrade my amp first. With the size of my small living room (13' x 12') I don't see a need bigger speakers.

Well I went to Tweeter to listen to the RM20 speakers and they sounded very good for their size/price. I also liked the larger/better/more costly speakers, but they wouldn't fit into the budget for now. I hooked them up at home in my 15x22 living room and they sound great with the amp.
The begining of Lord of the Rings 2, through the fight scene with the fire monster was super. Haven't been able to play more yet, but I think these will work well for now. Should be much better when I can get a subwoofer. Then, maybe in the future the larger speakers..............

    Thanks again

I have to say i went with the monitor 70 speakers and i couldnt be much happier . although I have to ask why you spent so much on that onkyo. I lookied into getting one and had it bech tested and it didnt live up to its claim, I went with DENON AVR-1907 85wpc rms 7.1 channel reciver. It bench tested and lived up to its claim. ANd it was only 600 dollars

For that price you could have gone with the 2307 as well. HDMI, 1080p switching, etc for when you jump to big screens. So you could have gotten more for your 600 bucks

That Onkyo is a very nice AVR

The 804 was only $669 and seems to do all it claims to be. I am very happy with it.
