The really good players will never be that cheap. Heck, the minimum DVD player I would use still starts around $200.

I completly agree with billbillw. Even though the prices are going down there comes a point where drastic decreases in price causes drastic decreases in quality. They have to cut costs somewhere, they are not going to start selling players at huge losses just to get the prices down (ignoring consoles).

How do you esplain that Oppo player everyone is ga ga over then? it's considered a budget player.. and it has a pretty big following. Seriously.. the cost innards of these players, is prob what.. maybe worth $30 - $40 most times.

Nah, a good video or audio DAC will cost $30-$40 @ minimum alone (HD capable). I'd put the total cost close to $200-$300 for current gen. It will probably get to the $40 dollar range in 18 months or so.

    Guessing...

That Oppo was still a $299 player (now reduced to $199). I think the innards would add up to a little more than you think, especially on the HD-DVD and BluRay. Early generations of components like this usually require multiple chips on multiple boards. Later generations usually reduce the chip count and end up with single board solutions, like the cheap DVD players out today. Still, the better solutions, like my Denon 2900, have multiple boards. An analog audio board, a SACD board, a DVD board, a power supply board...you get the idea.

I seriously doubt both formats will be @ $99 or $199 in a yr, unless youre on ebay buying a 1st gen player.

I'm there, but I'll take one at $199. Also, the media has to drop. If I'm paying $7-$10 for DVDs I'm only going to pay $12-$15 for Blue Ray.

I'd love to see how this plays out in regards to the two formats.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

It's not that we might buy the cheap player. But if it's cheap enough a lot of
others jump on a format, then that format could go on to be the winner.
Let's face it, no one wants a tie. A clear cut format for the future
would mean much to everyone involved. Let the games begin!

I disagree. We just need a good universal player. Nobody really won the whole SACD vs DVD-A war. They are both still out there (for now at least) and there are many fine players that are capable of playing both very well. It may take a few years, but there will be a solid universal player at some point. With both formats still alive, it will keep things competetive and maybe bring down the media prices.

They dont make tons of money off of people like us , we are typically not the mainstream buyer here, unlike say my parents my brother and such that want it to play and it looks good, and arent into the superb detail and audio smoothness like some of us here........The big companies are selling to the mainstream buyer BULK sales to walmart and such.......

Actually, the only way for the war to last that long will be if the HD formats are never adopted by the masses as is the case for SACD and DVD-A. There is still a lot of hype put out by both sides to confuse the issue. But some things are pretty clear.

Blu-ray is now the since inception leader in software sales:

    http://www.homemediamagazine.com/news/html/breaking_article.cfm?article_id=10323

Blu-ray is now outselling HD-DVD in software sales by a 2 to 1 margin, and this has been a very steady upward trend since last Christmas:

    http://news.digitaltrends.com/article12412.html

The price differential between quality hardware should be less than $100 by next Christmas as noted above.

And prices for blu-ray software may retail higher, but they have been heavily promoting the format with several high profile discount campaigns that have brought the internet price of the disks pretty much down to dvd prices for internet savvy buyers. The latest 50% off amazon deal has blu-rays flying off the shelves:

    http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/

And finally, its up to just one major studio, Universal to hold the line on this format war. All other major studios either produce exclusively for blu-ray or offer on both formats. So except for Universal's offerings, blu-ray is already a universal player.

I don't mention these things to start a flamewar or make people feel bad for owning HD-DVD. I have no doubt that HD-DVD PQ is stellar and that the cheap toshiba players have been very good deals for many polkies.

But the conversation here has turned to speculation on the format war, and I thought I'd just throw in some facts about what is currently going on in the industry. If Universal goes format neutral, the war for all practical reasons would be over in favor of blu-ray. There just is no equivalent scenario for HD-DVD to pull out the same kind of victory with all the momentum against them at the current time. Again, no insults intended. Just presenting what's currently happening in the industry for those that may be curious and/or making purchasing decisions.
