The system in my sig is my first real HT setup and the other thread I started about how much is your system worth was heading here to this thread.Do you guys ever worry about coming home from work and all your gear being gone?I know my house insurance covers everything in the house, but sometimes it's hard to replace some of our older gear and sometimes impossible. How much does an insurance Co. pay for your lost items, msrp?Or a figure you come up with?Every time I leave for work I look at my gear as it might be the last time I'll see it and the thought of insurance refund doesn't seem to placate the fact that it will be dearly missed.Kinda driving me nuts, how did you older audiophiles get through this at first?

I'm sure one of the members of this forum can answer the insurance question...

As for the possibility of losing the gear, I can understand your concern but when it really comes down to things that REALLY matter in life, it is just audio gear no matter how valuable it is. No need to drive yourself nuts over it. I think if something like that were to ever happen, you will be more upset at the idea someone was in your home\apt more than missing gear.

If you can’t get over that feeling of losing everything when you leave, try this:

Get an alarm and advertise that you have one with a sign or stickers. Get a big dog or at least a dog with a big bark. These two things keep the majority of criminals out of your home. Finally, be careful who you hang out with and who you show your system to.

    My thoughts exactly

    alarm, dog, and Mr. Colt..

and pay attention as to who you let in your home

Get home owners, or Renters insurance.....no need to make yourself sick over it....but I know how ya feel...I am very fond of my gear...

Mark and identify each piece, and make friends with your neighbors, so they will keep an eye out for you also...

Since my car was vandalized last Christmas, I have installed cameras inside and out

I was robbed once 2 years ago and they took everything, funny thing was I was living with a roomate and nobody knew what i had, just moved in with him 2 weeks before.I lost a guitar that was very special and had no insurance and I was sick for a couple weeks until I found it on ebay with the serial # and the cops went and got it.But I guess your right, you can always replace everything with something just as good or better. And my homeowners covers 25,000 of belongings in the house.I just don't know how they figure cost.

$25,000 to replace everything in your home? Think about that. I think you are probably very UNDERinsured.

Homeowners insurance is cheap, I would up your coverage. And make sure you have enough liability as well, an injury lawsuit will cost far more than a stolen stereo.

Always get "full replacement insurance" if you don't specify that then you will most likely get whatever the insurance co. feels the depreciated value is. In many cases that's pennies on the dollar. It only costs about 10% (+/-) more a year to get full replacement and it will save you many many headaches. Also take a video or pics of your items as well as recording s/n etc. This should be done for all items in your home beyond the basics.
"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!

We have a very small house,it's just me and the wife now in a little over 800 sq. ft. 25,000 would fill the house and put a jacuzzi in the back yard.I was just kind of wondering how they figure the worth of your gear when it isn't new anymore.

I was broken into last year, when I lived on a ground floor apartment facing the woods. They got in through a window. I was very lucky in many ways:

    1) I had renter's insurance coverage for $30,000
    2) They were stupid kids, so they bypassed the really rare & expesive stuff I cared most about. Mostly DVDs, ipod, digicam, booze - stuff that's easily replaceable. Though they did take one rare headphone & amp, they left way more valuable, better stuff on the floor (including 2 pairs of Audio-Technica L3000, 1 pair W2002, a Meridian G08, a pair of Grado RS1). They only took the headphone amp they did because of its gold knobs, IMO.
    3) Things were a mess, but they didn't vandalize what they didn't take

I moved immediately after this to a top (4th) floor apartment. I feel much safer now. The insurance process was annoying, but ended up very much in my favor...I estimated that I lost $4K in stuff (current market value) and I got $3.8K back from Liberty-Mutual. Not bad at all! Some stuff they depreciated a tad more than they should, but other stuff they were fairly generous with. Overall depreciation they factored in was less than 20%, IIRC - my stuff was pretty new but even still that's very generous. I'm impressed that they apparently had all the value data for the rare headphones & amp (worth about $2K). I bought all my gear used and I didn't have receipts for anything, but I did have pictures I took with my driver's liscence next to expensive gear - also had the boxes & manuals. You will need something to prove ownership since most likely your stuff will never be recovered - mine never was.

    Get coverage for your gear!!!

One other thing you can do to help you estimate incase you have a burglary or fire is to film everything you have. It only takes a few minutes to take a video camera and walk through your house. After you finish, review the recording to ensure that you could identify anything that you may lose. Once you are satisfied store the film at your parents house or safe deposit box or even at your desk at work. That way you have a record of everything you own and it is safe away from the house.
