keep blowing psw404

I was wondering if anyone could help me I think that for some reason the amp in my psw404 has blown. This would be the third time that this has happened. The first two times it was covered under warranty this time it will not be. If I am doing something wrong that I cant figure out someone please let me know. I need to figure out what is going on before I buy a new one and have it happens to the new one. Thanks for everyones help.

Most likely the level on the sub is too loud. For starters, the volume setting on the back of the sub should be no higher than 50%, ideally at the 9 or 10 o clock positions. You should also calibrate your sub with a RadioShack SPL meter.

Would help if you tell us what you have it hooked up to,what it is plugged in to and the settings you have it set to.

I have the volume set at half and I have It hooked up to a Yamaha HTR-5790

The Yamaha receivers have a very high sub output. From my experience with a HTR-5990, the unit puts out a loud signal on the subwoofer output.

What you need to do is lower the subwoofer output in the Yamaha to approx. -4 or -6db, and then set the dial on the back of the sub to less than halfway.

that is very odd to have three sub amps go bad on you... i got to think there is something more going on in your system or set up.. is there good ventailation in the rear of your subwoofer? not up against a wall or in a cabinent? the amps need good air flow to keep them as cool as possible. Also, is your sub hooked up to a grounded outlet and not a power strip?

Is your subwoofer cable in good condition? Amps usually die from being overdriven and heat build up.

Is your sub plugged into the switched outlet of the receiver? The switched outlet on the back of Yamahas only allow 1amp max.

This is odd indeed the PSW404 has been extremely reliable. When it was serviced the first two times, who performed the repair? Also, where and when was it purchased?

In my opinion, I think the issue is with the Yamaha receiver. It is overdriving the subwoofer amplifier.

My experience with Yamaha receivers is that the subwoofer output is extremely high compared to other receivers. As a result I had to lower the subwoofer channel to -6db on a Yamaha HTR-5990; and it was STILL louder than my Onkyo TX-SR702 at 0db.

If the user says the "volume was set to half" with the Yamaha, then it is equivalent to ~max gain with other receivers.
