Better pack the Cary up, and send her this way, just to be safe.

At the minimum, you don't want your tubes getting TOO microphonic...

Dude, a 3.4 won't make you spill a drop of James Beam while you're taking a tug.

    A 3.4 won't break off a hanger-on while you're on the throne.

A 3.4 won't make your Benz jump and scratch your 180 gram Dire Straits LP.

    3.4 ain't shiat.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Like the previous earthquakes in the area, I didn't feel a thing.

Looks like the earthquake was centered near the Hayward Fault, which I practically live on top of (in Castro Valley). For those not familiar with the Hayward Fault, scientists are predicting this will be the fault that is likely to cause the next great San Francisco earthquake. They are saying "Not 'if', but 'when'"

No panic yet, but I think it's time to get emergency supplies ready just to be on the safe side. You never know when "The Big One" will hit.

    Emergency supplies?

How about a Uhaul, and new bank note / mortgage? Supplies won't do a whole lot of good under a dozen or so feet of rubble, no?

I do not know to much about earhquakes and I have never experienced one. To me 3.4 sounds pretty bad. If it was me id be getting the hell out of there knowing that the big one is coming.

I am actually on bedrock, so it should be OK. However, it's very possible that the housing development where I live may be cut off from anyone else, including the local fire department, for days.

As for the U-haul....it's being planned. Seriously.

I suppose living in California for almost 30 years, one get accustomed to these things. The buildings here are all build/retrofitted to withstand earthquakes (up to a certain magnitude). No one here will worry much about 3.4 or 4.2 earthquakes, but we've had at least 6 to 7 of these in the same general area (east of Oakland, CA) within the last 3 months or so. On top of that, we are expecting "The Big One" since it's overdue. Kind of scary.

Not a problem. I make it sound like one of those 3 to 4 magnitude earthquake is nothing to fear, but when I feel them, they're still kind of "shocking" (sorry for the pun :D ). Who knows if these small earthquakes are precusors to a bigger quake. Nothing is certain....and that's the scary part.

BTW, here's the online San Francisco Chronicle article on the earthquake....

Keep in mind that every "number" on the Richter scale is ten times more powerful than the number before it. a 4 is ten times more than a 3, a 5 is ten times more than a 4. So threes and fours are pretty tame, even though they get stronger REAL fast as they climb up the scale.

RE: the big one. Since plates are always moving, and earthquakes are just big shifts where plates and whatnot meet, it's kind of a foregone conclusion that quakes will always happen, and that a "big one" is inevitable. My sister just started college at San Jose State, I hope she's outta there by the time the next Big One rolls around... :-/
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I am stocking up on those "energy reflective" emergency blankets available at Target for $1.99/each (in the Camping department). They are very small when folded and would be great if one has to spend the night outdoors (like after an earthquake). Of course, I would never want to test the blanket's effectiveness in a real emergency.

    bobman,

If History tells us anything, the San Jose area is "in the Zone" , but not to worry...The North Bay is usaully the one to get hit hard..

I think that in the next 5 years we will see a 6-8 on the Richter scale..

It seems that every 20 yes or so , we have a real shaker..

    Danny,
It`s always good to be prepaired...those blankets alone may not be the greatest, but coupled with a surplus army wool blanket....great warmth to be had !

The problem with being prepaired is that you store this stuff waiting for the day you need it, and if you don`t rotate it out to keep everything up to date, you have a bunch of stuff you can`t use anyway...and if you store it in the garage and the garage is a pile of rubble, you can`t use it anyway..

Makes the wife and kids feel better knowing I`m prepaired (somewhat), and that we have a generator, and water, suplies, etc.

Once she hits though, one can never really be prepaired , as you never know what`s gonna happen..
Living In California all my life, you become accustomed to the quakes, and tend to not take them very seriously...
