I finally found time to work on the Dual 1209 turntable I got from Cambir. I hope the Hitachi worked out well for you Cambir. The Dual didnt want to turn the platter but the motor was spinning. So I disassembled, cleaned and lubed the speed changing control and that allowed the idle wheel to move correctly. So now I can stack as many old Frank Sinatra lps on it I want. I got about 20 for free years ago. It sounds good and will play 78, 33, and 45 rpm records. I will only play old lps that are dirty and noisy. It is amazing that a tt from 1971 can still work well with a little tlc. Now if I could get the Voice of Music integrated tube amp and tuner to work I will have a vintage system. It has a bad hum. Need to replace some capacitors. But which ones? That is the question . More fun for later.

Dual turntables were so well-made that there are thousands made in the 1960s and 1970s that remain fully functional despite having received absolutely no maintenance. Not too many other pieces of machinery that can be said of. The most common problem with these old tables is that the lubricants have congealed into something akin to glue or loctite. Many times, just cleaning out the old dried-up lubricants and relubing the moving parts is all that is required. Occasionally a clutch part, idler wheel or plastic guide will need to be replaced. Although, new parts for these old tables are no longer being made, so many tables are around, that often times a "parts table" can be picked up for not much more than the cost of shipping.

Yeah the post that the speed changing mech slides up and down on was stuck. Freed it up and cleaned and lubed the post and it seems to work fine now. This tt allows you to stack many lps on it for hours of listening. When I got it home my wife asked "where is the arm that goes over the lps to keep them from tipping while suspended above the one that is playing?" I didnt know this type uses 3 little arms to hold them and thats it. It looks strange with the lp just sitting on the spindle. All the other tt I have seen or used in the past had an arm you swung over the top to keep them in place. But it works fine. Now I am going to find a dead tt to use as a record cleaning table so I can wash these old lps. Man some of them have goo on them. Fun fun.

Miracord Elac used the same system (German engineering). The changer spindle has three prongs which retract to allow the LP to drop. You can stack 4 or 5 LPS with no problems. These spindles are very hard to come by. You often find a used TT but it will not have the changer spindle. Don't lose yours as it may be worth more than the TT. I know I have been offered a nice sum for my Miracord changer spindle...but I'm not selling.

    bikerboy,

good to hear the Dual is being put to good use (especially as a working player).

The Hitachi is working great in the mother-in-law's place. She is very pleased to be able to play her records. Shortly after, a friend of hers offered a free Technics SL-D202, so I picked up that one for myself.

I still have the BIC and now I also have a non-working Technics SL-230 (picked it up for a couple parts for mine). Was it you or pblanc that was going to do more restoring? Either of you interested in these tables?

    Hi Cambir,
Glad to see our swap worked out. So now you are going to get into vinyl. I think it is worth it, very different than CD sound. I would be interested in a non working tt to use to clean very dirty lps. So I dont want to use something that could be used by someone else that actually works. All I need is a platter that turns and has a spindle in the center. If you have something like that LMK. Thanks

The Technics would probably be perfect for that. I'll send you pics.

Yeah, decided I could afford to get into a little vinyl if the player is free. :D Picked up a few albums locally.
