I was calibrating my system yesterday(mainly video calibration) and decided to run some other tests. I noticed that the LFE via HDMI on the Toshiba is significantly lower than on my Sony Blu-Ray player when at the same volume. Has anyone else experienced this problem or has some sort of solution? The bass is there however its just lower on the Toshiba. And that was just using the test tones on the Avia Cal DVD.

I use the analog outs, and there is a well known issue with loww LFE levels. I am not sure about HDMI.
Check out AVSforum.com, they have a huge thread on HD-A1 audio issues.

Ooooohhhhh - that might help explain why I disliked mine so much. I guess I shouldn't have been so lazy not to check up on AVS. Still, is it too much to expect a "state of the art" component to be halfway competent in the area of simple analog audio outputs? :p

What I mainly noticed was a perceived HUGE compression and lowered volume level during particular scenes that should have been in-your-face loud and powerful. Now that I think about it - that could possibly be caused by attenuation of the LFE channel (a problem with the downmixing in this case since I downmix to 2ch analog). My Denon DVD players never had this problem.

I'm in the process of trading my A1 for an old VPI turntable :D

To compensate for the low LFE through analogs, go into the A1's audio set-up and turn down the other channels (mine are around -5dbl). If you can adjust your analog inputs in the AVR do that. On many recievers you can't. Barring HDMI, you must use Analog for the advanced audio formats (DD+, TrueHD).
