Receiver Suggestions.. with Pre-outs

Currently i am using an older model denon with pre-outs, which is a loaner from my friends second system and i have till the end of march to give it back to him to find my own receiver.

What is the cheapest receiver with Pre-outs that i can get?
Retail in store would be a Denon 787 which is 500 + tax.

The cheapest i have found is this denon refurbished
Denon 1907 for 330 shipped.

I have an Outlaw 750 Amp which i power my speakers so all i would need is having a receiver with pre-outs.

A higher up receiver i have looked at is the Denon 3806 which can be found for around 800 online, how big of a difference in Audio Quality would it be from a 19xx/21xx series denon to the 38xx series?

I have LSI9's, LSIC, SVS Sub, and my main listening prefrence is 40% HT 40% video games, 20% music.

I am open to other brands, refurbished deals, etc...

I would go for the Denon 3806. If you cant afford that, go with the Denon2807.

Hey neighbor. I am running an HK AVR-235. Its 50 watts a channel x7, and has pre-outs. It has a very warm and detailed sound that hits hard too. I bought mine from HK direct refurbed for $250 shipped. Here is the link.

Don't jump the gun on getting a "good deal" seeing that you have time you can wait for a good deal.

Thats a damn good deal.

It has my minimum requirements of Component inputs and Optical inputs...

I put watches on the two currently on ebay.. lets see what price they go for.. anything close to 200 and i'll bid on one of em.

The only downside as a cheap pre/pro I've found is that HKs run a bit hot, so keep it well ventilated and out of "Protect" mode. Otherwise, as Ben says, it's a very nice base unit with most if not all the features you'll need.

I just bought an HK AVR245 on amazon.com for $299. Had a $50 coupon, got it for $250.

Got the beast yesterday (36 pounds) and it has been amazing. Sounds phenomenal in comparison to my old Kenwood and has the looks to rival any avr I have ever seen. The only minor issue I have is that setup is essentially 'on-screen' only. But that would only be an issue for someone like me who uses it as an amp for my PC.

Any big difference's in the 235 -> 240 -> 245 series HK receivers?

Ipod bridge on the 240 and 245 that needs an optional hookup I think. I think they just released a new model 247 that's got HDMI 1.1 too (could be mistaken), but you won't find this heavily discounted yet.

my HK over my Adcom GTP-500. The sound is smoother, and still very dynamic.

I'm running a 335 with my 3 monoblocks and the receiver is still warm, not as hot as it once was, but warm for something that just received 600w of relief.

Does the 245 Pass Thru 1080p?

The 245 only switches, no up conversion. I do believe it will convert s-video to component, but not much else....but that wasn't really an issue for me.

I have read that the 247 will up convert to hdmi, and may carry audio this time...

since you already have an Outlaw Audio amp.. why not just get an Outlaw Audio pre amp as well? that way it gets you into seperates.. instead of going the receiver route. just a suggestions. the Outlaw 970 7.1 ch. pre amp is b-stock for $649

I've been reading about new technology coming out.

I do eventually want a receiver with HDMI 1.3 switching and the new Denon 3808 model seems to have that. And also internal DD TrueHD and DTS HD.

I think I will for now, go with the cheapest model Pre-out that i can find and then upgrade to the 3803 once it is out.

Do you realize that you don’t need hdmi 1.3 or TrueHD and DTS HD decoding in a receiver? All content is decoded and mixed in the hd-dvd or bluray player and send via hdmi 1.1 as pcm. If you decode it in a receiver you will miss the mixing the player does like button effects and special features like director commentaries. Also the current denons switch 1080p.

Ah damn.. i did over look that thread..

Does the PS3 decode true HD audio on board? I was under the impression that it does not, and that is what i plan on using as a bluray player... And in that case i would have to send analog outputs to the receiver which the ps3 does not support either.. so the receiver would have to decode true hd.. i could totaly be mistaken...

But on the other hand, any one have comments about this denon receiver on ecost.com

If I was you, I would go with a nice Denon for all the bells and whistles of video switching and all that, do all your multichannel audio through RCA interconnects from the source and get an external amp to your liking.

I plan on using the ps3 as a Blu Ray player which does not have RCA output for multi channel and I already have an external amp Out Law Audio 750 5ch Amp 165wpc@8ohm

Here is how it works...

Hook your ps3 up to the denon 2807 (or if you want better sound quality, the 3806) via hdmi. The ps3 will decode dolby digtal HD (and with a software upgrade soon will be able to decode dts hd master) and send it over the hdmi as pcm. It will also take the PCM soundtracks directly from the disk if that is how the movie is released. Then using your receiver’s pre outs, hook them up to the amp.
