Upgrading RTi8 to RTi12 - keep or sell the 8's?

Current setup has RTi8's as front left/right and 4 RTi6's for the surrounds. When I upgrade the fronts to RTi12, would you move the RTi8's to left and right surround or keep the surrounds as all RTi6 and sell the 8's?

I'm leaning towards keeping all 6's for surrounds as that way they all exactly match and there's not much low end in the surround channels anyway.

On the other hand, 8's as SL and SR would still closely match the 6's as SBL and SBR and there's a bit of a cool factor in having towers in the back. Plus I'm having a hard time with the idea of selling the bigger speakers and keeping smaller ones (no logical but it still there!)

Opinions?

I suggest putting the 8's in the back.

    DITTO ON THAT Early.

You will really appreciate having those 8's in the rear. Especially if you ever get into multichannel music.

The best of all worlds (IMO) in HT and MC music is having the exact same speakers all the way around, but most people don't have space for towers in the rear, so compromises are made for placement considerations. With the 8's in the rear you'll be closer to that ideal than with the FX speakers.

Put them there, see if you like it. If not you can always sell them later. Would be a shame to not even try it if you have the space.

I always have a hard time selling speakers, especially when i know im not going to get what i paid for them. My solution is to take the 6's or 8's and put them in another room. I have my 6's hooked up to my computer.
    Speakers: LSi9 x 2, LSic, LSiFX x 2, Velodyne HGS-15
    Amps & Power: Rockford Fosgate T8004 x 3, Cascade Audio APS-55 power supplies x 5, and 1 farad capacitor.
    Electronics: Denon 3806, Toshiba HD-A1, & Sony KDL46XBR2

Ok, looks like I'll start with the 8's in the back L/R and put the 6's in the closet for a bit and see what I think. 6's are small, maybe I won't sell them at all...just store em until I need a bedroom setup or something...

Keep both. Maybe you'll go 7.1 someday. Either way, the spare pair can and should be used for a 2nd room setup.

I just noticed that you dont have an amp. Is that correct? I have demoed that entire line with only a receiver (speakers crossed over at 60hz) and the 6's sound better than the 8's, which sound better than the 12s. Now when you add an amp to the system, I'm sure it will be the exact opposite.

Just to clarify, I already am at 7.1 with (4) 6's currently handling the surround duty. The new setup would be either:

    (2) 8's and (2) 6's with the 8's at SL and SR and the 6's at SBL and and SBR

    OR

    (4) 6's remaining at SL, SBL, SBR, and SR.

That is correct - no amp. Just the Denon 3805. So you found with no amp the 6's were best, followed by the 8's and then the 12's?

Interesting...may be looking at an amp now.

M'bad. Wasn't totally paying attention. I would agree, you'll definitely want an amplifier. Your receiver won't be able to power all those appropriately.

yea, but I didnt compare the 8 and 12 very much. The 6's just sounded so much better with the receiver (there is only 1 woofer in a 6).

I definitely agree with moving the 8s to surround duty, especially if you like multi-channel music. I have a Denon 2807 and my 6s sound good off it's 110WPC, but my 8s off the amps sound much better. I would think the 12s would be a lot more power hungry than the 8s.

At some point I was hoping to upgrade my fronts and have 8s for surround and surround back, maybe then I'll go with the 12s.

I use the old bother line of RTi12 the RTi150 for Fronts, with the older bother of those RTi8 the RT800i for back surrounds I like the sound of them and I like the look of them. And may add its a WOW factor when someone sees it for the first time.
