Must emphasize that I'm only posting this for the benefit of people thinking of making the jump. I know how sensitive some people can be reading my previous posts trying to get info out there...
Prices for blu-ray stand-alone players will be dropping. Looks like economy of scale is kicking in big time.
$599 for a sony player by summer:

$299-$399 for a player by Christmas.

I'd wait 'till the new models come in at these prices before jumping into blu-ray stand alones, unless you absolutely have to watch casino royale now...;)

Although Christmas is a long time to wait for HD movies, I think there will be enough HD-DVD movies for me to hold until that point before getting BR player. For someone without a HD player, I wouldn't wait that long, SD just isn't "good enough" anymore. I haven't watched anything in SD since I got my HD player. I tried to play LOTR but had to stop because now I'm spoiled with the HD PQ.

That price is still high for a stand alone BD player. If you want a player, go on Ebay and get a Sammy or Phillips for about 500$. Better yet, get a PS3.
BTW, Cheddar, the Toshiba players are still cheaper.

EDIT: Competition is GRAND!:) -

Yes they are. But the squeeze is coming to the point where you'll save at most a hundred or so dollars by Christmas. And that's only for the rumored cheap Chinese players.
This format war is great for driving down prices. I'm sure they wouldn't have collapsed this fast if not for Toshiba hanging in there. The hardware companies' loss is our gain.
I'd say wait for the cheap Chinese HD-DVD players too if not for:
1. Still vaporware. I haven't seen any solid release dates for these things.
2. HD-DVD just doesn't have any exciting releases compared to Blu-ray. I could care less about the hardware, for HT enthusiasts, it's all about the content.
I'm on board with Sami, it's hard to go back once you've HD'd. . -
Don't worry... By then the prices on all the players will have gone down, and I'm sure we'll have more HD DVD titles also.

If you're a Matrix fan, HD-DVD is where its at (for now). -
seriously... what's your cut? You must be getting $omething for all this Blu-Ray cheerleading.
Carry on, go fight the good battle! Make sure you listen to that other guy and watch out for mercury laced vaccines. Like two peas in a pod... -

According to high-def digest,
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html
the matrix still doesn't have a firm release date on either format although it's planned for both.
I'm looking forward to it's release too. Do you have any dates? -
BTW, my 60G PS3 with less than 2 hours of use on it just took a crap.
Nice... -
Nope, I'm only releasing misinformation at this point.

That's ok. Misinformation and propaganda are the soup du jour. -

You must be mistaken. You probably have a black Xbox 360 (which they copied from the PS3) and it crapped out on you. Microsoft products fail, Sony products do not. -

Mike
and you thought you got the deal of the century by not paying sales tax. Microsoft is shifty, you gotta watch out. -
I can't believe you guys pay so much attention to what I write. Nice to have a following...;)

I can't believe you feel its necessary to start a new Blu-Ray propaganda thread on everyday that ends in Y. You really should ask the mods for a new sub-forum since all this Blu-Ray "information" is so important. It sure would clean up the clutter.
-
My original post only mentioned that people might want to wait on buying blu-ray stand alones until the prices come down. How is that unhelpful? It didn't get nasty until your post. Not sure why it's so important to you to not talk about HT electronics from one set of companies. If you want to go to the mods to complain about me, feel free. You might want to try a little harder not to go out of your way looking for ways to be offended, though.

Gee Captain Obvious, I'm sure glad you are here to tell us that electronics get cheaper over time, and not more expensive
By all means, this well hidden nugget of information deserves a new thread since it applies so surprisingly to Blu-Ray as well.cheddar wrote:It didn't get nasty until your post. I'm not offended. Maybe you're offended that people are making fun of your countless threads extolling the virtues of Blu-Ray. Get used to it.
Please, get back to your regularly scheduled propagandizing, my feelings need no concern/protection from you. -

It is helpful, but you started a thread 2 weeks in the Video Game section talking about the same thing "new ps3 getting cheaper ... by the summer”
If you had new articles to add, well maybe they would be better suited in the Blu-Ray section of AVS but you could have placed them in the thread you started yesterday. I’m a paid member of the HT spot but I have a hard time even going there anymore due to some moderator named Chad V. that simply cannot shut up about Sony. I think you are following this closer than the research departments are in the major brokerage houses.
I think everyone knows where you stand dude and for the most part I respect the information you provided the first time. Does anything else really need to be said other than the announcement of the final winner if it even comes to that?
Have a brew and enjoy what you have and leave it up to newbies such as myself to formulate our own opinions based on the overkill of threads that exist today on this topic. -

I guess I'll just ignore you from now on...
BTW, I think If I was following I'd be a Sony employee by now? -
The thing is, when cheaper players come, they are usually cheaper for a reason.
-
Interesting how you guys think I posted all these threads when I haven't even been on since around this time last week. (Although it was certainly interesting seeing you arguing with yourselves.) The reason those threads seem like they've been posted yesterday is that you all keep bumping them...
...And they call me obsessed?
I'm perfectly happy to have small informational threads like this just roll off into oblivion after people have had a chance to view them. So please, ignore me. But if this thread I started today keeps just one polkie from purchasing a $1000 blu-ray stand alone player when they would have wanted to wait until the summer to get a cheaper one, then I figure I've done a good thing. I could care less about all the handwringing. If you're not interested, just don't read my threads.
The real reason these articles are coming out now is that there is a lot of movement in the HD retail market. I'm not creating the news, just running across it in my quick browse on the internet each day.
I want to save polkies some money and heartache by threads like this, what's the motivation for the rest of you? -
I, for one, like and support cheddar. . .

wow... that's funny. No wait, you're serious aren't you? That's more sad than funny. I almost feel bad for you. Please, continue to believe that you have an unspoken audience here that actually finds your Blu-Ray posts useful.
I was giving you a hard time because I thought you understood and could plainly see that no one here cares about your duplicitous Blu-Ray posts. However, I now see that you lack this insight. I apologize. Do, carry on with your struggle. -
Thanks Andy,
I was beginning to feel like swiss cheese for a moment there... -
Cheddar, you really do have a big following here. I'm impressed!;)
Oh, and i noticed how wingnut4772 can't get sale her 360 for a REALLY good price. I mean the greatest console ever made. I would have charged double.:D
