I just noticed this today and I am thinking about purchasing it. Yes I know its refurb, yes I know its not as good as true HD.....but I am using an 8 year old Toshiba SD1200.

Do you think this thing is any good?

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=2280573&sku=S223-1136&CMP=EMC-TIGEREMAIL&SRCCODE=WEM1306DL

For $40.00 it might be worth the shot....HDMI output too :)

I saw that too. $40 bucks for a upconverting player, you really can't go wrong. I'd give it a try.

I just ordered one. THANKS FOR THE LINK!

I have the Sammy 4095 LCD and this will match it perfectly. I know the Oppo's are better and all but to me the difference from one upconvert to another won't be enough for me to pay double the $50 shipped deal here.

Can't wait to get it. The other good thing is you avoid the macroblocking issues that are possible with the 1080P upconverters using the F-chip (sammy 960 and oppo 971/981).

i think i'll land that one tomorrow!:D the theme of my system is low $ but killer sounds! i have a question tho: my TV only has 1 hdmi input. currently, i run the cable box in there. will i get hd quality if i run the box as component? also, will this player eliminate the edge of the picture getting wavy?

    thanks for the info!

Not a big fan of TigerDirect myself.

This player seems middle of the road from reviews I can find online. Lots of Amazon reviews complain of freezing and flaky behavior, and CNET user reviews seem equally lukewarm.

For 40 bucks it might be worth it (brand new it runs about twice that), depending on shipping, but personally I'd look out for something a little better, or wait and get a real high-def player that also upconverts.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I have the Sammy DVD-R135 Recorder. I paid $179. So $40 is well worth it for a player. Look at buying a recorder and toss out the old VCR, if you have not already done so. I have never had any problems with mine.

Grrr I dunno what to do. There is such a mixed bunch of reviews with this player. It's so hard to tell which are true and which are false because people have no clue what they are doing or how to set things up.

A lot of those issues were based on the Sammy LCDs not having the latest firmware. It was more of a problem with the TV than the DVD player.

Totally agree that there is better out there. But, for the money it's a good deal for someone that wants a decent upconverter. A real high-def player that also upconverts? That's a bit of a price jump I would imagine. What kind of refurb price are we looking at for one of those? (I'm truly asking because I don't know). :D

    Awesome price for 860!!!

IMHO, the best one in this series was DVD-HD941. It goes 720p/1080i through component, has Faroudja chipset, supports DVD-A and SACD... but it is discontinued and hard to find for a good price... (I am looking for 1 more).

The question one might ask is, if it's $40 how much better can the scaling chipset be in the player vs. the LCD you own. My money is on the LCD...

I had the samsungs before and they were ok but really not all that of a better picture from 480p,
But I bought an Oppo 970-Hd and it buries the samsung in video quality
via component and hdmi with the video hack,
The samsung also needs the hack to upconvert via component but it does suffer from mackroblocking.
As for the oppos you can get a refurb for $119.00 if you call and ask for them.

My thing is that I want to watch my DVDs in the 16:9 res without stretching everyone and making them look bloated.

Is there any way to do this without upconverting from the dvd player?

I wonder which samsungs did you have? Yes, samsung needs a 'hack', which takes 30 seconds... It also takes about 10 seconds to press a few buttons on remote to unlock what you call "macroblocking".

Upconverting has nothing to do with watching 16:9 widescreen movies. Make sure that you set the TV size to 16:9 in your DVD player options (and, of course, buy widescreen DVDs).
