Yamaha rxv650 and a preamp

Hey guys,
Are there any good resources for running a preamp. It looks like there are some people out there getting good results from doing this but I just dont understand it.
If someone could point to the pros and cons of this as well as whats the theory behind it...it would be appreciated...
P.S. used the search function and couldnt find anything in this forum that completely addressed this.
