I am thinking of playing around with some rolling. This amp can run the following type of tubes:

6CA7'S
EL-34'S
KT-88'S
6550'S

They require 4 per monoblock.

After exchanging a couple of emails with Stephen Monte of Quest for Sound (North American importer for Opera Audio) he replied the following:

"I would suggest the Jj E34L blue tubes you get better bass control , a tad more power and very sweet mids ...superb tubes.. very musical the Philadelphia audio society did a shoot out of 6 different El34's and the jj blues came first in all categories.

I have exchanged pm's with somebody from the AC and he recommended these as well.

After all this you are probably thinking what am I asking/waiting for (and your right). However, I know there are a lot of tube heads here and wanted to get your input on the listed tubes as well.

Also cryo vs. non.....marketing hype or real?

Thanks all,
Mike

The JJ EL-34 is a relatively inexpensive tube so why not? The blue glass has nothing to do with anything but aesthetics.

Cryo'd gear is for the bored audiophile and a waste of money.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    Mike,

You just picked them up didn't you? What's your hurry to swap out tubes? Let then settle in for awhile, kick back & enjoy the fabulous sound. But, if you are ansy (I'm guilty here too) you're in good hands talking with Stephen. In fact I was at his place last Saturday when 4 hugh skids from Consonance arrived. Man, talk about a kid in a candy store. In fact he had quite a few pieces going to your dealer. His name escapes me, (police officer comes to mind) but Stephen had high praise for him & his store & the amount of Consonance gear he moves. It sounds like you're in good hands up there.

I like to have something handy to roll regardless of it being new.

Stephen is a real cool guy, business is solid and I've dealt with him on a few Consonance pieces over the years. He's the Kevin Deal of the East Coast.

His name his Gary Clarke of 6sons audio. Highly recommended to any Canuck that may be lurking. GREAT prices and GREAT guy to deal with. Anybody that tells you when you go to their house don't bother knocking, just walk in, is a different type of person. I just can't do that though, I have to knock.

I wouldn't have even thought of rolling tubes other than these monoblocks coming up as a topic over at the AC and somebody planted the seed.

    Thanks guys,
