Sound quality of Sony DVP-S9000ES

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of adding a Sony DVP-S9000ES to my collection. I've been so enamored with the Sony SCD-C222ES I bought that I want to try out another Sony ES player.

I know this isn't bluray, it isn't HD-DVD, hell, it doesn't even upconvert. But, I think I can live with that for a while in my bedroom setup, especially if the sound quality is very good.

Can someone comment on the sound quality for redbook CD and SACDs? It will likely go in the bedroom, which is two channel only so 5.1 analog out isn't necessary. Besides lacking the multi analog out and DVI/HDMI out, this thing looks like a nice piece to play with.

Also, what is bluebook? I think I'm gonna spend about $200 + shipping, which is what any decent SACD player costs. . . again, not real worried about video playback being a bit dated.

Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure but I think that model had problems playing some CD-R's, if that matters. but you'd have to do some research to verify. I'm pretty sure I read that when I was searching for a good budget CD transport. I ended up with the model that came before the 9000. It is the DVP-S7700, which is infamous for being a VERY nice budget CD transport. I use it for this to feed my DAC and it sounds REALLY good, can't comment on the sound otherwise as I've only ever used the digital output.

I'd rate the DVP-S9000ES DVD player's audio capabilities on CD and SACD quite a bit above the Denon DVD-2900 and DVD-3910, both very good universals. About on par for SACD with the current Sony DVP-NS91000ES.

All about equal as transports into an external DAC for CD. Video quality is fine, but bettered by a $100 DVD player these days. I still have an S9000ES in the closet and wouldn't sell it for $200. I forget how much it weighs, but it seems to be in the high 20lb category, with lots of copper in the chassis.

Thanks, Emelyn. It would replace a Samsung HD850 for video (which was one of the first upconvert 1080i players on the market). I guess I could actually keep the Samsung in there as well, if it ends up besting the Sony in PQ.

I wonder how it would compare to my Pioneer Elite DV-59avi in terms of sound quality since both seem in the same ballpark review-wise.
