I appreciate all the advice, I just got a little discouraged when I saw the price of a "good" sub.
There is an SVS for sale in the forum for $400. ($350 if local pickup) Also look at HSU and outlaw, they have some nice subs for decent prices.

Decent subs can be a little pricey but alot of it comes down to room size. If you have a huge volume to fill with bass - it is going to cost you plenty. If your room is more modest in size, you can do it for under $500 if you wait for a good deal. What was your budget if you chose to get an amp?

Roscoe, if you're not exceeding the power limits of your 245(e.g. experiencing audible distortion on brief peaks), then you're fine. Adding more unused power in the form of a separate amplifier isn't cost-effective.

John K read my sig. This is why you'll never ever understand this hobby. IMO, your opinion is way off base. Your statement simply is UNtrue.

Amps do one thing and one thing only all power is dedicated to amplification not a display or a dsp sound stage or fancy lights or switching capabilities.

Also in an AVR when the manufacturer wants to cut costs - the amp is often the section that gets hacked on first and the most.
